Graduate Degree Program l Undergraduate Minor in Entomology
Faculty l Department Specialties l Faculty Research Interests

The Entomology Division of the Department of Plant, Soil, & Insect Sciences strives to develop and convey knowledge about insect biology, solve problems that insects pose for humans, and train students in entomology.

Of great importance is the development and implementation of insect control strategies that are both economically viable and environmentally benign. Development of these strategies requires a foundation of basic knowledge and a pursuit of research in physiology, toxicology, microbiology, behavior, population biology, and systematics. Our studies are focused particularly on providing support for the Green Industry (nursery, floriculture, horticulture, turf), the small mixed fruit and vegetable farms characteristic of our state, and to finding solutions to medical and urban insect problems.

In addition, because many insects have conservation value as wildlife or are beneficial in controlling invasive plant and insect species, our mission includes the conservation of such valuable insects.

Through our outreach programs, we transfer our findings to the public, to promote both the adoption of improved pest management strategies and greater appreciation of insects as part of the natural world. Finally, the Entomology Division strives to meet instructional needs of the Department, College, and University by directly supporting teaching programs in biology and ecology in other departments.
