Therapy for Survivors of Traumatic Events


Have you ever experienced a traumatic event?

Do frightening thoughts or images of the event keep coming into your mind?

Do you find yourself avoiding reminders of the event?

Are you hyper-vigilant, consistently anxious or easily startled since the event?


The program:

The Psychological Services Center now offers Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy is an evidence-based and trauma-focused treatment,

which involves emotional processing of traumatic experiences.  Research has shown these

effectively and efficiently reduce PTSD symptoms.


Fees are reasonable and based on income.

When:

We are currently accepting clients.


How long with therapy typically be?

Treatment sessions are weekly, for 9-12 weeks and last 90-minutes.


How much does it cost?

Screenings are free.  Therapy fees are reasonable and based on income.

William Matthews, Ph.D., Clinical Supervisor (Licensed Psychologist)
Dr. Matthews, joined the faculty in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts after receiving his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Connecticut in 1980.  Professor Matthews has published numerous articles on hypnosis, hypnotic phenomena, hypnosis in psychotherapy.  For the last 15 years he has been a member of the School Psychology faculty working with area public schools to improve student academic and social emotional development of students.  Professor Matthews served 4 years in the U.S Air Force in the military police and one year of combat duty in Viet Nam.   In addition to his regular duties, Professor Matthews is a clinical supervisor in the Psychological Services Center at the University of Massachusetts.  Professor Matthews is committed to working with combat veterans and police officers.


Frank J. Gallo, Ph.D., Clinical Respecialization Student

Dr. Gallo is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Western New England College, Massachusetts. He received a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island. He has experience and training in Deployment Psychology, and providing Cognitive and Prolonged Exposure treatments for PTSD. He is a retired police officer from the Cranston, Rhode Island Police Department. His police work experience included delivering firearms and defensive tactics training programs; training in specialized tactics, weapons, and equipment; and resolving or assisting in resolving high threat situations or special threat situations including barricaded suspects, hostage situations, high threat drug raids, and high threat warrant services. He has written police training manuals on issues surrounding police use of force, stress, and decision-making. He provides police training at the recruit and in-service levels, in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.


LT Nausheen Momen, Ph.D., Clinical Respecialization Student

Dr. Momen has been serving as a Research Psychologist in the Navy for the past 6 years. Her research projects focused on a range of issues related to warfighters including stress and performance, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Currently, she is working on advancing her clinical experience and credentials at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in order to provide support for the increased demand for psychological services in the Military.


James Benton, Ph.D., Clinical Respecialization Student

Dr. Benton has a Ph.D. in Industrial & Organizational Psychology, with over 20 years of experience helping individuals and groups deal with high stress, high demand situations.  Jim is a student in the post-Doctoral Clinical Psychology program at UMass Amherst.  He was a Partner in Accenture LLP, a global management consulting firm.
