What Does the Provost Do?

The responsibilities of the Provost are as broad and diverse as the University itself. As well as responding to the needs of the deans, department heads and chairs, and faculty, Provost Charlena Seymour and her staff work with other areas of campus and the President’s office to support and advance the quality of the University.

On a daily basis, the Provost’s Office handles such vital issues as faculty and staff personnel concerns including recruitment, promotion and tenure; budget requests and needs; academic programming initiatives; and faculty concerns. The Provost works closely with the deans of the nine schools and colleges and the deans of the Graduate School and Commonwealth College, as well as the Director of Libraries, Vice Chancellor for University Outreach, Vice Chancellor for Research and the directors of the programs and areas which report to the Provost. The Provost also collaborates with the Faculty Senate.

In summary, the Provost’s Office supports the efforts of the faculty and staff who work to ensure that the mission of the University, academic excellence, is achieved.
