Announcements:

1. Provost Seymour asked how the Council members would like the meetings structured for next year. This past year, researchers and scholars from various schools and colleges were featured; several more will be featured in the fall. Any suggestions should be forwarded to Provost Seymour so that the meeting time will be utilized in the best possible way.

2. Provost Seymour announced that the Deans/Directors should begin to develop a three-year plan of where your School/College is going and how you plan to get there. She will develop a template, and main areas to be addressed are: faculty development, research and graduate education in your School/College, and the undergraduate experience. Additional categories may be added by contacting Provost Seymour. The report should be approximately five pages in length.

3. Data from the Provost Team visits last fall are being summarized and will be distributed shortly. Information may be incorporated into the five-year plans. Joyce Hatch has developed a template for space needs. Deans were urged to use this as a means of planning space needs for new faculty, laboratory space, graduate student needs, etc.

4. Two searches are winding down and Provost Seymour hopes to have closure within the next two weeks. Two finalists for Vice Provost for Outreach and Continuing Education and three finalists for Dean of the College of Engineering are on campus this week to meet with various groups of faculty, staff, and administrators. All were encouraged to attend meetings; feedback is very important.

5. Faculty who have received national awards/honors should be recognized by the campus in an appropriate manner, perhaps a campus-wide reception at Memorial Hall. Three significant award winners are: Kalidas Shetty, Jefferson Science Fellow; James Tate, American Academy of Arts and Letters; Gregory Tew, Presidential Early Career Science Award.

6. This summer an ad will be placed in the Chronicle of Higher Education regarding faculty hiring next year. It will be a generic article with a notation to contact the Dean of the School or College.

7. Everyone was encouraged to buy their tickets for Homecoming.

Agenda

1. John Mullin led the discussion on the fee for International Students. Approximately 70-200 students have failed to pay the fee, but no students have been withdrawn due to lack of payment. A lengthy discussion was followed by a vote of the Deans/Directors present. The consensus was to have all international students pay the fee; and the administration would work out a payment schedule over the next semester for students who were having difficulty paying the fee.

2. Steve Demski and John Mullin proposed a plan to the Council whereby an intellectual and financial partnership would be developed between UMass Extension and Schools/Colleges. Extension took the greatest cut in the budget and needs to get involved in the academic mission. Smith Lever money would be used to partially fund a faculty position to teach one course per year and perform research that would match the needs of the department with Extension. It is anticipated that 10 faculty positions could be created to satisfy the mission of Extension and the mission of the University.
