Agenda:

1. This month’s meeting featured a presentation from the College of Natural Resources and the Environment. Dean Cleve Willis introduced Derek Lovley of the Microbiology Department who made a presentation on “Adventures in Bioprocessing with Geobacter.” This new area of research has gained national and international attention and has been featured in Time Magazine, the New York Times, NBC, and USA Today. Over a nine year period, Dr. Lovley has been awarded $24 million in grants; $5 million was generated this year. The Amherst campus is one of two universities to have a genomics center. Geobacter is prevalent in the Potomac River, rice paddies, and swamps. It has the ability to clean up contaminated groundwater from oil spills, immobilize uranium contamination from entering water, and works on other radioactive metals.

2. Joyce Hatch, James Cahill, and Judith Steinkamp discussed the Capital Asset Board. Space Management reports to Administration and Finance. The space allocation procedure was discussed. Space is assigned – not owned. The Capital Asset Board consists of members from the four areas of administration, finance, student affairs, and academic affairs. Information needs to be gathered, and there needs to be a system of checks and balances. The new space request form was discussed. Request forms must be filled out and needs explained. The Capital Asset Board will then review and act on requests.
