Meet the Provost > Council
of Deans > March 2, 2004 March 2, 2004 Attending: Eileen Breslin, John Cunningham, Andrew Effrat, Joseph Goldstein, Frank Hugus, Bruce MacCombie, John Mullin, Thomas O’Brien, Lee Osterweil, Susan Pearson, Janet Rifkin, Jay Schafer, Linda Slakey, Cleve Willis.
Dean Andrew Effrat introduced faculty members Robert Maloy, Cynthia Rosenberger, Barbara Madeloni, Linda Griffin, and Ruth-Ellen Verock-O’Loughlin and thanked Provost Seymour for bringing the “Bridges to the Future” project to the School of Education. Professor Maloy led the discussion and pointed out that even though
Athol and Orange are north of the University of Massachusetts Amherst,
they are worlds apart. These communities are isolated, have low incomes,
high unemployment, and also high drop out and teen pregnancy rates.
Discussions have taken place with school officials in the area, and
they are eager to be in partnership with the University and ready to
problem-solve with us. The School of Education currently has a successful
program in Springfield. Communities have a great deal to teach us; we
must put theory and research into practice. Innovative programs such
as Bridges to the Future and 180 days in Springfield will renew and
restore the community. Rural education has been neglected; the focus
has been on urban education. Mr. Cosby will join officials from the
community and the Amherst campus for the kick-off event for the Bridges
to the Future on March 15. Other links: |
