Announcements:

1. Provost Seymour introduced Jay Schafer, the new Director of Libraries.

2. Vice Chancellor Gargano announced that the search has begun for a Director of Admissions and is chaired by Ralph Faulkingham. This is a good opportunity for the Deans/Directors to meet with the candidates. The number of applications is up; out-of-state recruitment has been significant. The first group of acceptance letters is being sent out. Information on applications per school and where they are coming from will be available soon. The UMass Round-Up will begin soon, with current UMass students personally calling newly admitted students. The incoming class is anticipated at 4200 students, 120 more than this year’s class.

Agenda:

1. Frank Hugus and Carol Lebold discussed coordination of programs abroad. There are a number of faculty-led programs abroad about which the International Programs Office is not always informed. This could be potentially bad for colleges, faculty, and students. Issues of concern are: safety and security of students, integrity of the program, and budgetary implications. IPO has the resources and expertise to coordinate these programs. Contract Director Hugus or the Program Director for a specific area.

2. A presentation on Nanotechnology was conducted by Co-Directors Mark Tuominen and James Watkins, Associate Director Thomas Russell, and Staff member Michael Wright. Mass NanoTech has received over $22 million in research funding since 1966 and ranked 7th in funding in 2001-2003. Jay Schafer offered the assistance of the library in web site development and database management.

3. John Dubach discussed the IT Standards and Policy Committee which is coordinating wireless, printing, and e-mail on campus. Representation is needed from Deans as well as Academic Affairs. One of the issues being looked at is credit card payments for Graduate School applications. There are approximately 8,000 applications, and presently there are two people who make the 8,000 calls for credit card numbers.

4. Bryan Harvey, John Cunningham, Susan Pearson, and Marilyn Blaustein led a short discussion on Instructional Capacity Meetings.
