Except as noted (*) the dates listed below are working personnel deadlines.

Every effort must be made to meet them, but they are not legally binding.

Those dates preceded by asterisks are Trustee mandated deadlines, and must be observed.

Annual Faculty Report and Evaluation

 

 

 

September 1, 2009

 

Department head or chair completes Section 1 of the Annual Faculty Report and Evaluation Form and distributes to faculty members. Forms can be downloaded at: http://www.umass.edu/provost/admin/personnel/afr.html

 

 

 

October 16, 2009

 

Faculty members submit completed Annual Faculty Report and Evaluation Form (Sections II-V) to department heads or chairs.  If applicable, alternative department or program chair completes Section VI.

 

 

 

November 6, 2009

 

Department personnel committee and department head or chair returns completed Annual Faculty Report and Evaluation Form (Sections VII-VIII) to the faculty member.

 

 

 

November 20, 2009

 

Faculty member completes Section IX of Annual Faculty Report and Evaluation Form, retains one photocopy and returns original to department head or chair.

 

 

 

December 7, 2009

 

Department head or chair retains one photocopy and sends completed original Annual Faculty Report and Evaluation Form to the dean.

 

 

 

December 31, 2009

 

Dean retains one photocopy of completed Annual Faculty Report and Evaluation Form and forwards original to the Provost. If the dean makes any comments, the dean shall send a copy of this final page to the faculty member and the appropriate department head or chair when the dean forwards the form to the Provost.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tenure and Associated Promotion

 

 

 

September 1, 2009

 

Department heads and chairpersons must, within the first three weeks of the semester, notify all members of their departments who are scheduled for reappointment or tenure consideration during the semester that a review of their records will be made for the purpose of a personnel recommendation.

 

 

 

November 6, 2009

 

Department heads' and chairs' recommendations for tenure and associated promotions for those faculty members whose tenure decision year is 2009-2010 due in deans' offices.

 

 

 

January 4, 2010

 

Deans' recommendations for tenure and associated promotions for those faculty members whose tenure decision year is 2009-2010, second semester, due in the Provost's Office.

 

 

 

August 15, 2010

*

University procedures require that faculty members being considered for tenure be notified of the award of tenure, or of one-year terminal appointments, no later than this date.

Senior Lecturer and Senior Lecturer II Promotion Timing

 

 

 

September 1, 2009

 

Department heads and chairpersons must, within sixty days of the start of the fall semester, notify all members in their departments who are scheduled for review to the rank of Senior Lecturer and Senior Lecturer II.

 

 

 

January 29, 2010

 

The faculty member under consideration for promotion to Senior Lecturer and Senior Lecturer II submits his or her portfolio to the department head or chair.

 

 

 

February 26, 2010

 

Department personnel committee recommendation for promotion to Senior Lecturer and Senior Lecturer II due to department head or chair.

 

 

 

March 15, 2010

December 15, 2009

*

Notification of reappointment or expiration of appointment of faculty members in second year of service whose current appointments expire August 31, 2010.  If an initial two-year appointment terminates during an academic year, notification of reappointment or expiration of appointment must be given at least 6 months in advance of its termination.

 

 

 

January 22, 2010

 

Recommendations due in the Provost's Office for reappointment or expiration of appointment of faculty members in their first year of service whose current appointments expire August 31, 2010.

 

 

 

March 1, 2010

If an appointment terminates during an academic year, notification of reappointment or expiration of appointment must be given at least 12 months in advance of its termination.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sabbatical Leaves

 

 

 

 

September 1, 2009

Deadline for submission to department heads of sabbatical leave reports for all those who took sabbatical leaves during the academic year 2008-2009.

 

 

 

November 6, 2009

 

Applications for sabbatical leaves for 2010-2011 are due in department offices.

 

 

 

December 11, 2009

 

Sabbatical leave reports for 2008-2009, with department head's or chair's summary, due in deans’ offices.

 

 

 

December 14, 2009

 

Sabbatical leave requests for 2010-2011 (1st semester, 2nd semester, or entire year), approved by department heads or chairs, due in deans’ offices.

 

 

 

January 29, 2010

 

Sabbatical leave reports for 2008-2009, with dean's summary, due in the Provost's Office.

 

 

 

January 29, 2010

 

Sabbatical leave requests for 2010-2011, approved by deans, due in the Provost's Office.

 

 

 

March 19, 2010

 

Notification of faculty members granted sabbatical leaves for 2010-2011 (except those being considered for tenure).

 

 

 

April 2, 2010

 

Final date for faculty members to apply for cancellation of previously approved full-time sabbatical leaves commencing in 2010-2011, or for conversion of previously approved full-year sabbatical leaves commencing in 2010-2011 to half-year sabbatical leaves to be taken in either semester of 2010-2011. (Conversions from half-year to full-year sabbaticals may still be approved at the discretion of the dean.)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Leaves without Pay

 

 

 

 

Application for leaves without pay for either or both semester, 2010-2011, may be filed with department heads or

chairpersons and deans as soon as appropriate justification for them is complete.  However, the following dates

should be observed.

 

 

 

 

 

April 2, 2010

 

Final date for faculty members to apply for cancellation of previously approved leaves without pay for either or both semesters, 2010-2011. (Applications for leaves without pay in 2010-2011 may, however, be considered after this date.)

Periodic Multi-Year Review

 

 

 

January 4, 2010

 

Faculty members who are scheduled for Periodic Multi-Year Review during 2009-2010 must submit review materials to the department head or chair.

 

 

 

April 23, 2010

 

Department heads and chairs must notify their faculty members who are scheduled for Periodic Multi-Year Review during academic year 2010-2011.

 

 

 

August 6, 2010

 

The Dean submits the 2009-2010 Annual Periodic Multi-Year Report to the Provost.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Other Pertinent Dates

 

 

 

May 1, 2010

 

No offer of appointment for Fall 2010 to faculty members at another college or university should be made after this date without special clearance (AAUP standard).

 

 

 

May 15, 2010

 

Faculty members should not resign after this date (AAUP standard).
