the Provost > Biography of Charlena Seymour
Charlena Seymour (B.F.A., Howard Dr. Seymour is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA), a scientific and professional organization of over 100,000 members, and served as the President of ASHA in 1997. Prior to her ASHA Presidency, she was elected ASHA Vice President for Quality of Service and monitored all the accreditation and certification programs. She is the creative editor for the Communication Disorders Textbook Series published by Butterworth-Heinemann. She has numerous publications, national and international presentations about speech disorders, and recently co-edited Introduction to Communication Disorders: A Multicultural Approach . This book won the Will Solimene Award of Excellence in Medical Communication. Dr. Seymour is a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Communications , Howard University , the award of Intercultural and Race Relations from the Harvard Foundation of Harvard University (1997) and the Cecil and Ida Green Honors Professor from Texas Christian University . She and her husband, Dr. Harry Seymour, were commended in April 1998 by a special resolution of the Mississippi State Senate "for their willingness to spend their time, talents, and education on the state of Mississippi , as they have done so unstintingly." In June 1998, Dr. Seymour led a delegation of Speech-Language Pathologists to South Africa for the Citizen Ambassador Program to promote international goodwill through professional, educational, and technical exchange and led another delegation to China in 1999, and one to Australia in 2000. Dr. Seymour was Chair of the Council of Graduate Schools Advisory Committee on Minorities in Graduate Education and President of the Northeast Association of Graduate Schools in 2002-03. She has been awarded over two and one-half million dollars in state and federal grant proposals.
