    Tilman Wolf, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named senior vice provost for academic affairs by acting provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs John McCarthy. The appointment is effective at the beginning of the new academic year.

    Barbara Krauthamer, associate professor of history, has been named Dean of the Graduate School. The appointment, effective May 12, was announced by Provost Katherine Newman.

    Michael Eagen has been chosen to be the new Associate Provost for Academic Personnel and will begin his new role on March 13, according to Katherine S. Newman, provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.  Eagen will assume most of the responsibilities of John Bryan, who will continue part-time to complete the current round of collective bargaining and will then work on limited projects before retiring.

    Laura M. Haas, an IBM Fellow at IBM Research – Almaden, known for her foundational research on information integration technology, has been named dean of the College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

    Haas, who joined IBM in 1981 and was named an IBM Fellow in 2009 in recognition of her career accomplishments, will assume her duties at the college on Aug. 1, says UMass Amherst Provost Katherine Newman, who announced the appointment.

    Tricia R. Serio, professor and head of the department of molecular and cellular biology at the University of Arizona, has been named dean of the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst by Provost Katherine S. Newman. Serio is expected to assume her new duties on campus in August 2017.

    Serio will take over from Steven Goodwin, who is stepping down after leading the college and one of its predecessors, the College of Natural Resources and the Environment, since 2000.

    The University of Massachusetts Amherst has appointed Cynthia I. Gerstl-Pepin of the University of Vermont (UVM) to be the new dean of its College of Education, effective July 1, 2017.

    Gerstl-Pepin, who is currently associate dean of UVM’s College of Education and Social Services (CESS), will succeed Robert Feldman, the deputy chancellor who has served as interim dean of the college since last February.
