Classroom 5 Teacher Biographies Spring 2004

Head Teachers

The head teachers work in their assigned ECLS classroom throughout the school year and guide a diverse team of student teachers each semester.

Hi, my name is Dotty Meyer and I'm the master teacher in classroom #5 as well as the Lab School Director. I am also the School of Education faculty member responsible for teaching the undergraduates registered in the preschool practicum here at Skinner Hall, in addition to teaching a course on preschool methods and curriculum. I am from Long Island, N.Y. and have lived in several places such as Washington State and New Zealand.
I am married and have two children. My husband Jack Mino, is developing an outdoor leadership program at Holyoke Community College. I am also a doctoral student focusing on teacher training at lab schools.
My hobbies include writing children's books and hiking with my goats, Chili and Pepper, as well as playing with my pet rabbits. I've been working with young children for the past twenty five years, and still learn something new every day!

Hi! My name is Kate Strub-Richards and I am the co-teacher in room 5 this semester. I was the co-teacher in room 4 from September of 2000 until May of 2002. At that time I was pursuing my Master’s Degree while my daughter was a preschooler in Room 5. After I left the ECLS I decided to pursue a Doctorate Degree in Child and Family Studies. For the past year I have been teaching Introduction to ECE in the School of Education. The preceding semester I was a University Liaison for ECE students who were completing their final student teaching practicum.
Besides being a teacher, graduate student and mother (my children are thirteen and seven) I am also conducting a pilot study (towards my dissertation) on how kindergartners and first graders use the classroom computer as a mindtool. I am fascinated with the role of technology in the school environment. I have taken many educational technology classes and am presently an assistant teacher for two online graduate level educational technology classes. I also created the ECLS website and am responsible for the maintenance of the website.
I am thrilled to be back at the ECLS collaborating with Dotty Meyer and our awesome teaching team in Room 5. I delight in reacquainting myself with parents I knew two years ago and the younger siblings of my previous students.

Student Teachers

The student teachers are enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Certification Program at the University. They work in a teaching team at the Lab School for one semester to satisfy requirements for Pre-K through 3rd Grade Certification.

Hi! My name is Heidi Munro. I am originally from Townsend, Massachusetts. I am a junior here at UMass Amherst. I am majoring in Psychology with a minor in Elementary Education. I am hoping to get into the CTEP program to become an elementary school teacher when I graduate. I am a member of the UMass Minuteman Marching Band, and have been playing flute in it for three years. I have worked with children for many years, and enjoy it very much. I have been working at day camp during the summer for the past five years with many different age groups. I have been working in a kindergarten classroom for the past three winter breaks helping out in the classroom as a teacher's aid
and substituting as well. Last semester I did my first student teaching experience with a fifth grade class at Sheffield Elementary School. I have realized in my many experiences in working with children that this is the career that I want to pursue, and so far enjoy every second of experience I can get!

Hi my name is Jennie. I’m a student enrolled in the University Without Walls Program. I am the mother of two boys. I enjoy reading and taking long walks. I am very grateful that the lab school extended an invitation to all students to have the opportunity to work with the children at the preschool. The Reggio Approach that is used here has made this experience quite unique. This approach empowers the children with confidence. I have always loved being with children and find that I am always amazed at what they can teach me. I believe that a child's innocence and wonder are the greatest gifts of all. By keeping company with children I hope to keep some of that innocence and wonder.

Hello! I am Soung won. I am a pre-school teacher and a graduate student in Child Study and Early Education. I am also doing a director's internship at the Hampshire Community Action Commission. I love children because of their rich imaginations, their natural curiosity, their energy, and their sense of individual competency. I love to watch them expand their knowledge, construct relationships and negotiate their way through whatever the environment presents them with.
I am fascinated by the Reggio Emilia Approach to learning and teaching in which the role of the pre-school teacher is to provide children with a creative experience that will in turn lead to a creative exchange among child, teacher, and parents. I am fully embrace this philosophy which is why
I am training here at the Lab School. I would also like to investigate how such a method would be brought and applied to my own culture back in Korea.
Early - How do YOUNG children grow and learn best?
Childhood - How do CHILDREN think, feel, learn?
Education - How can children LEARN and be TAUGHT?

Hi. My name is Katie McGee. I am a senior Comparative Literature major, and I am also in the Masters program for Early Childhood Education. I am from Malden MA. My hobbies include reading, making jewelry, playing softball, and playing pool.
I was a student teacher at the lab school last semester and I liked it so much that I had to stay for the rest of the year. I have worked with children in a variety of settings. I have been a camp counselor in Melrose, Sudbury, and Somerville, I coached gymnastics at the Gymnastics Academy of Boston, and I taught the summer program at the Special Care Unit of the Department of Mental Health in Boston. In addition, along with my education classes I have done several practicum in classrooms in the Amherst area. I love working with the children here at the lab school, and I look forward to using everything I have learned here in my own classroom.

My Name is E. Johnson Owumi and I'm a Senior Psychology Major here at UMass. This is my first semester working here at the Early Childhood Laboratory School and I'm really having a great time. I really love working with children because I'm able to see how beautiful children are. The teaching Method that we use here is the Reggio Emilia Approach. We are able to give guidance to the children, which helps them observe and learn in their own little environment. I love children and I just wanted to thank all the staff for their excellent work with working with these beautiful Kids. UNO.

Hello, my name is Julia Chase. I am one of the teachers in Room 5, and I am also a senior here at UMass. I am originally from a little town called Cohasset, located on the South Shore. I have one brother and one sister, and I have loved taking care of children for as long as I can remember. I had my first babysitting job at the age of 12, and here I am today, a preschool teacher. I will be graduating in just a few short months with a degree in Early Childhood Education and Art Therapy. After graduation I plan on opening my own preschool so having this opportunity to work at the Lab School has been perfect for me. This experience also makes me so much more excited about my future career. Everyday at the Lab School is exciting and different in it's own way, and it is wonderful to be a part of all the fun and learning that takes place here!

Hi! My name is Christie Walker and I am from Webster MA. I am currently a sophomore here at UMass. I am a psychology major and am hoping to get into the Early Childhood Education program. I love working with children! I spent the past summer working with a group of 25 fourth graders in Worcester, MA. I have also worked with children a lot through my church. I am very excited to be here and am looking forward to a great semester!
