The Early Childhood Laboratory School

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST

The Early Childhood Laboratory School closed in May, 2004.  The director of the laboratory school opened a new preschool in September 2004, "The Renaissance School". The new school is also inspired by the educators
of Reggio Emilia and shares a similar teaching philosophy with the laboratory school. Please visit their web site to learn more

The Early Childhood Laboratory School (ECLS) is a unique learning environment for preschool children aged 2.9 to 5 years. Nestled in the center of the UMass Amherst campus, the school serves as a primary teacher training site, as well as a research site for faculty and students at the university. The school provides a supportive atmosphere where both children and adults test their theories in order to discover and grow.

Inspired by the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, emergent curricular studies are negotiated by the children and teachers and the "project approach" is implemented. "Projects" can be either long or short term, lasting just a few moments or weeks depending on interest and possibilities for indepth exploration. The curriculum aims to help children develop creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and a rich sense of inquiry.
