How to Apply

Submitting your application online is preferred, but you are welcome to submit a paper application instead. If you choose to mail a paper application, please double-side all materials if possible.


Online Application

    1. Submit an online application. You will be prompted to upload the following documents (in pdf, doc, or docx format):

    • Statement of purpose: explain your general reasons for applying to PREP and your specific career interest. You should include career objectives, interest in science, research interest and experience, skills and your intended area of specialization. Please type your response on NO MORE than 2 double-spaced 8 1/2" x 11" pages.

    • Current curriculum vitae/resume: should be no longer than 2 pages.

    2. Submit college transcript(s) from all colleges and universities you have attended to prep@grad.umass.edu or mail it to the address provided below. You may submit unofficial transcripts at the time of application; however, an official transcript showing baccalaureate “degree conferred” should be provided before beginning the UMASS Amherst PREP.

    3. Submit a copy of your GRE general test scores (if applicable).

    4. Submit two letters of recommendation. These should be from faculty who are familiar with your interests and abilities in science. If you have participated in laboratory research, one or all letters should be from your mentor(s).

    *Please note that all materials may be sent separately. Do not wait for all materials to be available before sending in what you have, otherwise your application could be delayed.


Paper Application

    1. Download the application, fill out all required fields, and send it to the address provided below.

    2. Submit a statement of purpose to the address provided below. In your statement, you should explain your general reasons for applying to PREP and your specific career interest. You should include career objectives, interest in science, research interest and experience, skills and your intended area of specialization. Please type your response on NO MORE than 2 double-spaced 8 1/2" x 11" pages.

    3. Submit a current curriculum vitae/resume to the address provided below. Include any academic or other honors that you have received. Resume should be no longer than 2 pages.

    4. Submit college transcript(s) from all colleges and universities you have attended to prep@grad.umass.edu or mail it to the address provided below. You may submit unofficial transcripts at the time of application; however, an official transcript showing baccalaureate “degree conferred” should be provided before beginning the UMASS Amherst PREP.
