Undergraduate Programs – Major
Advising System for Undergraduates
The Department offers three levels of advising for its majors.
- Every student is assigned a faculty adviser upon enrolling in the political science major. Political Science majors are strongly encouraged to visit with their faculty adviser on a regular basis, preferably at least once each semester, to insure that they are aware of the department’s major requirements and are making satisfactory progress toward meeting those requirements. Consultation with an adviser during the Counseling Period each semester is particularly important.
- The Department assigns a graduate assistant to the Department Counseling Office in room, 222 Thompson Hall for "drop in" advising. Posted outside room 222, are the office's hours, which vary from day to day in order to accommodate the diversity of students' schedules. Appointments are not required.
- During the Counseling and Pre-registration periods each term, Pi Sigma Alpha (the National Political Science Honors Society) offers undergraduate peer advising for majors in the Luther Allen Lounge on the second floor of Thompson Hall.
Although Political Science advisers will try to help, detailed questions about UMass Amherst or College requirements should be directed to the Colleges of Arts and Sciences Advising Center in Machmer E-24
