Pre-Law Advising Fall 2006

The UMass Amherst Pre-Law Advising Office provides comprehensive, high-quality advising services to students and graduates interested in pursuing legal careers.  Our mission is to ensure that UMass alumni are able to attend a law school of their choice, and go on to become happy and successful lawyers.  To that end, we offer a range of services to enhance students' applications.  These include:

  • Outreach to encourage UMass Amherst students to consider the option of law school;
  • Options-counseling regarding whether and where to attend school;
  • Assistance with the application process, including LSAT preparation, crafting of law school applications, facilitating strong faculty recommendations, and options for financing law school;
  • Law-related events to educate students about the law school experience, the practice of law, and professional opportunities; and
  • Networking and advocacy with law schools throughout the country to promote recruitment activities at UMass and to strengthen ties between UMass Amherst and the law schools of our graduates.

In addition, we are building our capacity to establish internship and mentoring programs to network UMass lawyer-alumni with current pre-law students.  Students considering law school are especially eager to gain experience working in law offices and law-related organizations, and to learn about the types of work lawyers do.  Accordingly, a priority of the Pre-Law Office over the next year will be to develop a pool of UMass alumni with law degrees to present on panels, engage in one-on-one mentoring, and to provide internships for our students.  Because many of our students must balance work and school commitments, they will especially benefit from paid field experience during the regular term, summers, and post-graduation (for those not entering law school immediately following graduation).  To provide better access to such internship opportunities, we also hope to eventually provide internship grants to qualified pre-law students.

The Pre-Law Advising Office is staffed by Aaron Lorenz, Ph.D. Dr. Lorenz teaches various courses in the Department of Legal Studies and has been at the University since 1998. He attended undergraduate school, graduate school, and law school in California, his home state, before coming to Amherst for his doctorate.
