Graduate Students – Ph.D. Program

The Department of Political Science offers programs leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree. The Department's approach to the discipline of political science is consciously eclectic, based on an assumption that the study of politics cannot be reduced to any one theory or a single set of methods. Mutual appreciation among faculty members with diverse interests and approaches characterizes the intellectual atmosphere of the Department. On balance, faculty interests tilt more toward the study of theory, institutions, law, and political development than toward political behavior, rational choice, or quantification. Listed below are summaries of degree requirements. These are described in fuller detail in the graduate catalogue and under Ph.D. Program Requirements.

Relations between faculty and graduate students are friendly and informal. Graduate students serve on a number of Department committees and share in the formulation of policy related to curriculum development and management of the graduate program. They also work closely with faculty in teaching and advising undergraduates.

The Department actively assists Ph.D. candidates in securing teaching and research positions. In the recent past, new Ph.D.s have secured tenure track positions at a wide range of public and private institutions, including Duke University, the University of Washington, University of New Mexico, Goucher College, Eckerd College, and Mount Holyoke College, as well as a number of public colleges and universities in New England.
