PLNTSOIL 540: Plant Breeding

Course Description:
The improvement of crop plants through plant breeding. Emphasis is placed on the genetic principles underlying the breeding methods for self and cross pollinated crops. The phenomena of inbreeding depression and heterosis are explored. Comparisons are made of the different selection procedures for simple and complex traits. Other topics include breeding plants for disease resistance and adaptation to stressful environments, use of genetic markers, interspecific hybridization, the conservation and utilization of wild germplasm and recent techniques in genetic engineering.
