Department Activities
Students are encouraged
to participate in extracurricular activities on campus. Many Plant, Soil & Insect Sciences students are active in clubs and organizations related
to horticulture, environmental science, turfgrass management, and
floriculture. The department also sponsors several events throughout
the academic year which are open to the entire campus community.

Environmental
Horticulture Club
The Environmental
Horticulture Club is a Registered Student Organization on campus
which promotes increased interest in the Horticulture Industry including
landscaping, ornamental horticulture, turf grass management, fruit,
vegetable and floriculture production. Recent club activities include:
- Tours of outstanding
greenhouse facilities and botanical gardens such as Longwood Gardens
(in Kennett Square, PA), Brooklyn Botanic Gardens (Brooklyn, NY),
and Pleasant View Gardens (Louden, NH).
- Weekend trip
to UMASS Outing Club cabin in Bethlehem, NH with plenty of hiking,
sledding, campfires and fun.
- Pumpkin Sale
on campus to raise funds for club activities.
- Holiday wreath
sale. Club members decorated and sold over 40 wreaths to campus
community to raise funds for other fun club activities.
- End-of-Semester
dinner party at local restaurant.
- Meets weekly
on Wednesdays during the academic year.

UMass
Turf Club
The UMass Turf Club is a student chapter of
the Golf Course Superintendents Association
of America. The Turf Club is open to all students including 2-
and 4- year undergraduates majoring in Turfgrass Management. Club
activities include interacting with invited speakers and field trips
to local golf courses, professional sports facilities, and regional
turf conferences. Club membership provides the opportunity to network
with potential employers.

The Fernald Club
The Fernald Club is a professional graduate student organization whose activities include participation in Graduate Student activities of the Entomological Society of America, involvement in the seminar program of invited scientists, involvement in the development and operation of one-credit graduate seminars (ENTOMOL 792A), publication of the biennial Fernald Club Yearbook, the discussion and representation at Departmental Meeting of graduate student concerns, and the organization of social events. Graduate students, at the discretion of the faculty and selected by the Fernald Club, may have a voting representative on Departmental Committees, including the Awards Committee and the Computer Committee. Student participation in the Fernald Club is strongly encouraged.
Department Sponsored Events:
- HerbFest
is an annual event run by students in the course Herbs,
Spices, and Medicinal Plants (PLSOILIN 280) offered each
spring. Students and local vendors display their wares in natural
products with demonstrations, exhibits, food samples, and medicinal
herbs.
- A Holiday
Show and Sale is held each December in French Hall
which highlights the creations of the floral design students in
PLSOILIN 210 (Retail Floral Design) and PLSOILIN 297F
(Advanced Floral Design). It is a marvelous display of colors,
textures, and creativity. Students provide demonstrations throughout
the day to visitors from campus and the Amherst community. Seasonal
plants are also available for purchase.
- A Soils
Field Trip is held every other summer which provides
students the opportunity to study soil formation and classification
in other regions. Recent trips have traveled to Virginia, Maryland,
Delaware, as well as the New England states.
