Outreach and Public Engagement Summit for Grad Students

A collaboration between the Office of Professional Development and a team of graduate students, the Summit will involve a panel (from 1:30 - 2:30pm) of non-UMass affiliated professionals who will speak about outreach and public engagement ("OPE") opportunities. Following the panel, there will be an OPE Idea and Resource Exhibition. The goals of the Summit are to 1) promote outreach as a professional pathway, 2) connect students with outreach opportunities for the purposes of improving communication skills and grant competitiveness, and 3) strengthen collaboration and capacity among outreach organizations and individuals. Contact Laura Hancock ( for more details.

Strengthening Your NSF Proposal with Effective Broader Impacts: A Campus-Wide Workshop For Faculty

A strong statement of the broader impacts (BI) of your research in an NSF proposal can elevate your proposal above the competition, as well as help you communicate the importance of your science to any audience. Well-executed BI activities can also help you realize greater influence with your research. This workshop will help you develop ideas for BI projects and evaluation, and identify partners. Faculty panelists, including 2018 PEP Fellow Elsbeth Walker, and PEP Steering Committee Members Jenny Ross, Laurel Smith-Doerr, and Ezra Markowitz, will present their experiences with developing, carrying out, and evaluating projects that address BI goals.
