Change Your Directory Information
To modify your contact information available in People Finder and the next available UMass Amherst print directory, select one of the categories below, then follow the guidelines applicable to your status (student or employee).
Important Note for University Employees: Updating your directory information does not update your HR (Human Resources) record. Regardless of whether you have been a UMass student or not, you must visit the Human Resources Employee Service Center (325 Whitmore) to:
- Change your name for payroll, health insurance, state retirement and other HR services
- Update your work address in the HR system

University employees must send an email to directory@oit.umass.edu with their old and new names, and their Campus ID (found on each paycheck) or NetID (OIT Account user name). Note that this email must originate from a UMail (OIT-maintained) or departmental email account. University employees who are, or have been, UMass Amherst students must follow the directions for students above.
Other members of the University community, who are not students or University employees, but are affiliated with the University in a formal capacity (e.g., Visiting Scholar, ROTC Staff, Religious Center Staff, etc.) must send an email to directory@oit.umass.edu with their old and new names and their NetID (OIT Account user name). This email must also originate from a UMail (OIT-maintained) or departmental email account.
To change your telephone number(s):
Students can use SPIRE to change their telephone numbers. Go to Menu > Personal Portfolio > Phone Numbers. Note that Residence Hall numbers cannot be changed.
All University employees with a SPIRE Logon ID can change their telephone numbers in SPIRE. Go to Menu > Personal Portfolio > Phone Numbers to access the Phone Numbers page.
University employees who do not have access to SPIRE must send an email to directory@oit.umass.edu, indicating the type of telephone you wish to change (Work, Permanent, Local) and the new telephone number(s). Include your Campus ID (found on each paycheck) or your NetID (OIT Account user name). Make sure you use your UMail (OIT-maintained) or departmental email account to send this message.
To change your UMail address (i.e., your OIT-maintained email address), fill out an Online Help Request (https://hds.oit.umass.edu/xhelp/std/start.jsp).
To change your departmental email address (maintained by another UMass department, another UMass campus, the President's Office, or one of the Five Colleges), contact the specific department, then update your email information in SPIRE. Simply go to Menu > Personal Portfolio > Email Addresses and revise your UMass Dept Managed/5 College email address.
Alternately, you can send an email to directory@oit.umass.edu with the latest information (new and old email addresses). Include your Campus ID (found on each paycheck), or your 8-digit Student ID (found on your UCard), or your NetID (OIT Account user name). Use your UMail or departmental email account to send this message.
NEW! If you have both a UMail and a departmental email address, you can now choose which one will be published in the University directories. In SPIRE, on the Email Addresses page, simply select the Preferred check box next to the address of your choice. Changes will appear in People Finder within two business days and in the next available print directory.
Please Note:
- Students, faculty and staff can only publish their UMail or departmental email address. If you are a retired employee, you also have the option of listing a non-UMass email address.
- Your UMail address will be listed in both directories unless you select the Preferred check box for another email address in SPIRE or you request that your email address be kept private. Note that University employees cannot request a privacy flag for their University email address.
- As a student, your official email address remains your UMail address, even if you choose to publish a departmental email address in the University directories.
- At this time, any changes will be reflected in 2007 print directory.
Learn more about updating your email addresses in SPIRE from our SPIRE Support pages for Students, Instructors or Staff.
