Maria Galano has been selected as a 2019–21 UCLA HIV/AIDS Substance Abuse and Trauma Training Program Scholar. HA-STTP is a collaboration of the Center for Culture, Trauma and Mental Health Disparities, the UCLA AIDS Institute and the Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services. HA-STTP will provide multi-disciplinary, state-of-the-art training to better equip early career investigators to submit and receive grant funding from the National Institute of Mental Health.
With funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Galano will receive education from institute faculty on topics such as family violence, sexual violence, and trauma; sociocultural aspects of health and mental health; and substance abuse and its associations with HIV and traumatic stress.
The primary aim of Galano's research is to uncover the mechanisms by which early-life violence exposure affects long-term well-being. She also seeks to partner with communities to use this research to develop more targeted, culturally-sensitive interventions for violence-exposed individuals.
