Tolerance in a Community of Learning
We are saddened to learn that some Arab and Muslim
members of our community have experienced harassment from outside of the
campus in the wake of the September 11 tragedies. People of color and
those who merely appear to be of Middle Eastern descent have also been
targeted. Incidents of violence nationally have contributed to the sense
of fear and isolation on campus.
We encourage any student, faculty, or staff member
who feels harassed or alone to reach out for support.
We also encourage any student, faculty, or staff member
who witnesses such an action to report it to one of the offices below.
- Undergraduate students: Dean of Students
Office - 545-2684
- Graduate students: Graduate Dean - 545-5271
- Faculty and staff: Faculty and Staff Assistance
Program - 545-0350
- Members of the community: Public Safety
- 545-2121 or
International Programs - 545-2710
Further information will continue to be posted on this Web site (http://www.umass.edu/chancellor/september11).
We also urge the community to read the Trustee
Policy Against Intolerance.
We are proud of our community for its inclusiveness
and caring, and urge continuing support and sensitivity towards each other,
regardless of the color of our skin, our nationality, or our religious
beliefs.
