Welcome New Students, Parents and Families

It is that time of year again, when we welcome you to UMass Amherst!  The summer before your student arrives on campus for the first time is a busy one, full of preparation and planning. New students will attend New Students Orientation (NSO) to familiarize themselves with the campus, pick their courses, get their UCard, complete their housing preference application, and meet their fellow classmates!

College isn’t a transition just for students, but for their families as well. For that reason, we offer a Parents and Family Orientation that runs concurrently with your student’s session. By attending orientation, you’ll interact with faculty and staff and meet families of other incoming students. You’ll learn about academics, college finances, safety, student health and well-being and even take a look in some residence halls! Here is what attendees said about Parents and Family Orientation:

I found the UMass Amherst orientation to be an exceptional experience! Organization top notch! The whole program has been very reassuring. I feel confident my child will be safe and have a wonderful start in September! I also found the suggested open ended questions to ask my child as a follow up to their experience very helpful”2014 Attendee

“I am very impressed so far with the individual attention we and our student have been getting. Thank you for a great two days- we’re very excited for the fall” 2014 Attendee

“How wonderful to work so hard to provide parents with so much useful information! I look forward to watching the next 4 years unfold, and I feel more confident that parents will be included in the process--especially important for peace of mind with my 1st child going to college”. 2013 Attendee
