Offices of Undergraduate Research and Studies

One of the advantages of attending UMass is the opportunity to participate in cutting edge research.  As a major research university, UMass faculty do world class research and can provide significant research experiences to undergraduates.

Students can work alongside faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and other research professionals and gain experience that is helpful for successful application to graduate or professional schools.  Students can also gain research experience in professional settings in business, government and nongovernment agencies.  In addition, students can find opportunities at other universities and research centers across the country and around the world.

Research is competitive and planning is important for finding and applying to programs on and off campus.  Students should:

  • Get to know their professors by introducing themselves and going to office hours.
  • Identify faculty who will write strong letters of recommendation.
  • Develop their own interests and goals.
  • Look up faculty research web sites from across campus to become familiar with their areas of focus and publications.
  • Get involved with their department and the campus community including clubs and activities.
  • Write, update and professionalize their resume.
  • Start early.  Some program deadlines start in the fall and various programs have deadlines during the spring semester.
  • Take advantage of other resources on campus, such as the Learning Resource Center (LRC) which offers tutoring and supplemental instruction (SI) and the new Excellence through Student Enhanced Learning (ExSEL) program.

Assistance in finding and applying for research opportunities is available at the Office of Undergraduate Research and Studies (OURS).

OURS staff meet one on one with students of all majors and class years and search for specific research opportunities that match student interests. Staff help students understand the application process including deadlines and application materials required for each opportunity.  OURS will help students develop a timeline that matches their needs and interests.

Students can set up a time to meet with a member of the OURS staff by contacting or stopping by the OURS office at 1020 W.E.B Dubois library.
