University Without Walls
The University Without Walls
Founded in 1971, the University Without Walls is an undergraduate
degree program which grew from a commitment to self-directed learning and
an awareness of the particular educational needs of nontraditional learners.
UWW students are adults whose jobs, family responsibilities, or other life
circumstances make traditional bachelor's degree programs impossible.
Features of this program
- Individualized, Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts or Science Degrees. Working with faculty sponsors in their field of interest, UWW students design individualized, interdisciplinary majors, utilizing the resources of the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
- Credit for Experiential Learning. The UWW program offers students the opportunity to receive University of Massachusetts credit for experiential learning through the program's Prior Learning Process. Students typically receive 15-30 credits through this process.
- A High Level of Support. A curriculum that focuses on the development of intellectual and communication skills and caring advisers and sponsors help students become successful in their academic pursuits, complete academic tasks, and navigate the University. Small, discussion-based UWW courses offer a learning environment in which students support one another.
