Definition of Outreach at UMass
The formal definition of outreach that has been approved by the University is:
"Outreach is teaching, research, and service that engages the University with external constituencies. Outreach activities generate knowledge, share resources, and apply the expertise of the University of Massachusetts in ways that advance both the public good and University and unit missions."
It is important to understand that this work must apply academic expertise, that it must be beneficial to both the external constituent and the University and that it encompasses aspects of teaching, research and service. Outreach teaching is oriented to off-campus constituencies; Outreach research is study that involves collaboration with off-campus constituencies; Outreach service is academic expertise provided to off-campus constituencies.
