RISE Germany
http://www.daad.de/rise/en/
RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 1.5 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance.
RISE internships were first offered in 2005 to applicants from the US and Canada. Following the first intake of around 100 students in 2005, the number of participants has increased steadily. In 2008 as many as 298 candidates (out of 846 applicants) were awarded an internship. Due to its great success, the program has now been extended to the UK.
RISE hopes to accept as many students as possible for a summer internship in Germany. However this is a scholarship program and there are only limited funds available. Each year we have to turn away many students that apply to this program. This year we received over 1,160 applications, and we hope to have 340 interns this summer.
RISE 2009
Interested students should apply for a RISE internship through the DAAD. (Please see below for further information on How to apply.) The application period for undergraduate students from the US, Canada, and the UK, who wish to take part in an internship during summer 2009, is: December 8, 2008 to January 31, 2009. Important: Based on the fact that January 31, 2009 is a Saturday applications will be accepted until February 4, 2009 (receipt date).Applications sent after January 31, 2009 (postmark) will not be accepted.
Unique Opportunities in Gaining Research Experience in Germany
RISE - Research Internships in Science and Engineering - gives students in the fields of biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering and physics the chance to spend a summer working with German doctoral students on serious research projects. The doctoral students help integrate the undergraduate directly into the lab work and serve as personal and professional mentors.

RISE is more…
Participating Undergraduate Students in science and engineering get a glimpse of advanced research work while gaining desirable practical experience in their field. They learn about Germany from an insider’s perspective while meeting new people and taking their first steps with the German language - or practicing their existing language abilities. Long-lasting friendships are born from these intensive work environments that are balanced with fun evenings or weekends out with colleagues.

The Program Benefits Everyone Involved
Participating PhD Students receive valuable assistance with their research projects. They profit both professionally and personally from contact with the RISE students, by increasing their knowledge of the culture, lifestyle, and higher education systems in North America and the UK. The project also offers doctoral students an excellent opportunity to gain subject-specific English language knowledge.

Learning From Each Other
Beyond playing matchmaker for undergraduate research assistants and doctoral students, DAAD also invites all fellows to a three-day event during the summer where they have an opportunity to learn from each others experiences while exploring a historic city and a modern German multinational corporation.

Program Support
RISE is supported with a generous grant from the European Recovery Program (ERP) of the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology. Large industry organizations in Canada, Germany, and the US also support the program. Sponsors including the German Chemical Industry Fund (FCI) help build ties to industry and finance additional fellowships. We thank all of our supporters for their generous support.
