Program Description:
Undergraduate students are matched with MSG Cancer Center faculty who will serve as their mentors for an 8-week summer internship. Interns will conduct research in one of many ongoing areas of investigation including cancer drug resistance, signal transduction, programmed cell death, molecular pharmacology, angiogenesis, and carcinogenesis (see the links below for descriptions of past research projects and mentors’ research interests). In addition to laboratory work on their specific projects, interns learn about diverse aspects of cancer research through weekly discussions with the research mentors. Social activities that are organized with mentors and Program benefactors provide an opportunity for informal interactions, and for interns to learn more about the MSGCC research community. At the conclusion of the internship, the interns deliver an oral presentation of their research to the mentors, Program sponsors, and research faculty. |
Goals:
Program Objectives: To provide the intern with the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge areas of research in the current fight against cancer by means of experiential training in the laboratory of a Cancer Center Faculty mentor.
Intern Obligations: 1. Conduct research in a careful and diligent manner that is in accordance with the Program’s safety training course, and adheres to the schedule established with the research mentor. 2. Attend weekly Mentor’s discussion sessions. 3. Deliver an oral presentation of the research project.
Eligibility:
Applications for the 10-12 internships awarded per summer are reviewed by committee. Undergraduate students with a genuine interest in cancer research, as reflected in their application package, are considered on a competitive basis. As housing is not provided as part of the internship, qualified applicants from the Baltimore metropolitan area are given first consideration. However, outstanding out-of-state applications will also be considered. |
