The 2009 Global Health Internship Program at Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI) provides an opportunity to spend the summer working side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to infectious disease research. For the summer of 2009, SBRI will place 3 highly qualified undergraduate interns at the Institute. The program runs for a period of 10 weeks and culminates with a formal report and presentation by each intern.
Summer Global Health Internships will be conducted from June 15, 2009 to August 21, 2009. To complete their assignments during the 10-week period, interns should be willing to make a commitment of 35-40 hours per week.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, candidates must be undergraduate students with Junior or Senior status in the 2009-10 academic school year. Entering freshmen, sophomores, and recent graduates are not eligible. Current SBRI employees and returning interns are also ineligible. As a temporary, summer intern you will not be considered an Institute employee and will not be eligible for SBRI benefits.
What You Will Learn:
With SBRI scientific staff, interns will assist in specific research projects in a designated SBRI scientific program. Prior to beginning work in the laboratory, interns will receive training with chemicals and biological materials and learn sterile and other general scientific techniques. Laboratory tasks include solution making, sterilizing, library research, materials inventory, etc. In some instances, work may include tissue culture, gel electrophoresis, DNA preps, bacterial cultures, and computer work. The experience will help prepare students interested in careers related to the biosciences.
Final Reports:
Following the internship period, participating interns will be required to prepare a final report recapping their experiences and learning moments at SBRI. The reports will be showcased at an end of program event and presented by each intern.
Stipends:
Interns are paid at an hourly rate of $11.25. At a full-time schedule, this equates to approximately $4,500.00 in earnings. Internships may be extended beyond 10 weeks with approval from the Principal Investigator and Human Resources but typically no additional funds are available.
Selection:
Interns are selected competitively on the basis of overall qualifications and interests. Successful candidates will be required to submit proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent residence status prior to beginning their training. Applicants will be notified of their selection by the SBRI Human Resources Department within the first week of April 2009. Additional materials may be required by selected applicants. Applicants will be notified at that time of the necessary materials.
