Summer Undergraduate Research Program

The NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Musculoskeletal Research Center (MRC) of the New York University School of Medicine offers a Summer Undergraduate Research Program for qualified students who are currently in their sophomore or junior year of college and are interested in pursuing medical research careers as MD, PhD, or MD/PhD candidates. The purpose of the program is to provide students who intend to pursue careers in the biomedical sciences the opportunity to participate in research and be exposed to the excitement of an academic medical environment at a major research center. Current subjects of research include development and testing of an artificial cartilage material, testing of minimally invasive knee replacement designs, and creation of a patient database to evaluate clinical outcomes of orthopaedic surgery.
The program runs from May 31, 2009 - August 1, 2009. Candidates who are selected must attend for the entire time period. Students are responsible for their own housing. The Program provides each participant a stipend of $1,500.00. The application deadline is March 13, 2009.
Program Features

• Each student is assigned a personal project and is expected to perform as a graduate student with appropriate supervision and instrumentation.
• Participants will be invited to introductory and professional level seminars, as well as careers seminars conducted by deans and other faculty regarding opportunities available in the biomedical sciences and how to apply for specific programs.
• A cultural component to the program includes dinners at various ethnic restaurants, Broadway shows, museum tours, and a variety of other local cultural events.

Criteria for Admission
The program is designed for mature, well-qualified undergraduates who are currently in their sophomore or junior year of college. Students will be selected based on academic record, previous research experience, if any (at least 1 full semester of bench laboratory research (ideally), and letters of recommendation from faculty advisors and/or research supervisors. Substantial weight will be given to applicants’ commitment to a career in biomedical science research. This program is open to all U.S. and international students who are currently attending a U.S. college or university.
