Louisiana State – Biological Sciences (Varied Opportunities)

The Department of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University, in conjunction with funding form the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program, is hosting nine week research opportunities for eligible undergraduate students in the Life Sciences. Work will be done in established laboratories, with interaction among scientists and peers.

 

 

Selection                                                                                                                                                
    Students must:
1) be science majors with at least a 3.0 GPA
2) be considering a career in Life Sciences
3) have completed Introductory Biology and at least be enrolled in General Chemistry.
4) be US Citizens or a non-citizen but attending a US University on a student VISA

Awards                                                                                                                                                 
    Successful applicants will receive a competitive stipend, LSU tuition and research credit, and on-campus     housing.

Research Opportunities                                                                                                                  
    Research opportunities are available in many of the laboratories of faculty members within the College of     Basic Sciences
        1. Biological Sciences : biochemistry, microbiology, plant biology, and zoology & physiology
        2. Chemistry
        3. Pennington Biomedical Research Center
        4. School of Veterinary Medicine
    Opportunities in other science laboratories may be arranged under special circumstances.

Application Procedure                                                                                                                    

Applications are no longer being accepted and applicants will be notified of their status as soon as  possible.
1.) Complete one of the Online applications:

Email a 500 word statement as an attachment in Microsoft Word covering the following: Your career goals Contributions you could make to the laboratory group in which you work Why you believe you will benefit from a research experience. LSU students should also include an outline of your potential summer project, including the name of your proposed mentor.
3) Two letters of recommendation from college science faculty members.
LSU students should have their proposed mentors write one of their letters of recommendation.
These letters should be EMAILED directly from the faculty member to <sheri@lsu.edu>.
4) An unofficial copy of your current college transcript—to be sent to the HHMI/LSU Program Office either by mail (to ARRIVE by the Application Deadline Date), fax (225-578-7627) or as an attachment to an email message. (Current LSU students may omit transcripts).
