The Psychiatry Summer Internship Program provides an opportunity to learn about neuroscience research and clinical care in the field of psychiatry through an 8-week placement with Department of Psychiatry faculty of Indiana University School of Medicine. The program offers different tracks at four locations including adult psychiatry based at University Hospital, intermediate inpatient psychiatry at Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital, child and adolescent psychiatry at Riley Hospital for Children, and basic neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatric Research
Parameters
The 8-week program is open to four students and provides a stipend of $500 per month (total of $1000) with prorated payment by week if the entire program is not completed.  The program begins on Monday, June 1, 2009 and ends on July 24, 2009. The work week is Monday through Friday with an expected maximum of 40 hours weekly. 
Applicant Requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in medical school or have a declared interest in medicine with two years of college completed by the program start date, and currently be enrolled in course work leading to meeting requirements for medical school admission.
Program Details
Each participant will be assigned to one of the primary tracks outlined below and activities will vary by site.  All participants will also have self-study programs including readings and electronic media assigned each week. Informal shadowing of residents and participation in formal resident didactics will be assigned dependent upon schedules. Participants will meet as a group with Department of Psychiatry leaders several times throughout the 8-week experience.
Adult - Based at University Hospital with exposure to outpatient clinical assessments, medication management, and therapy. Also, opportunities for observation of consultation-liaison work on inpatient adult medical units.  Shadow social workers, physicians, psychologists.  Limited exposure to outpatient clinical research with focus on alcohol, mood, and/or anxiety disorders protocols.
Intermediate Inpatient - Based at Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital with shadowing of intermediate inpatient care of both adults and children. Exposure to clinical assessments, medication management, and therapy.  Limited contact with research protocols primarily focused on psychotic disorders.
Basic Neuroscience - Based at Institute of Psychiatric Research with exposure to ongoing pre-clinical research projects.
Child and Adolescent Outpatient - Based at Riley Hospital for Children with exposure to outpatient clinical assessments, medication management, and therapy. Also, opportunities for observing consultation-liaison work on inpatient pediatric units. Shadow social workers, physicians, psychologists. Limited introduction to outpatient clinical research with focus on autism and ADHD.
