Internships
The E.N. Huyck Preserve and Biological Field Station offers college level internships during the summer and Fall and Spring Semesters. Successful applicants will act as a staff member of the Preserve and its Field Station under the direction of the Director and Resident Biologist. These internships are designed to acquaint the successful applicants with the normal operations of a nature preserve and to allow interns to participate in on-going research projects in community and ecosystem ecology, conservation biology, animal behavior and evolution. Arrangements for college credit can be made with the applicant's home institution and department (or through SUNY-Albany). Internships can be arranged to be equivalent to anywhere from one course to a full semester load (3 hr credits -- 10 hr/wk). Students keep a journal and advanced students will also develop an independent research project. Independent research projects also require a written report.
The Sponsor
The E.N. Huyck Preserve was founded in 1931 to preserve the beauty of Lake Myosotis, Lincoln Pond, the Rensselaerville Falls and the surrounding environs and to support research on the native flora and fauna of the area. In 1938 the Biological Research Station was established. The Preserve now consists of about 2000 acres of forests, fields, streams, and lakes. Since 1937 over 250 professional scientists have conducted about 210 research projects resulting in 270 published scientific papers and 150 reports. Interns will have the opportunity of working with the Resident Biologist or one or more of the scientists whose research is supported at the station during the year. Both field and laboratory work is included.
The Projects
Currently several projects are planned or underway each of which will benefit from the assistance of an Intern. The projects are in the following areas:

  • inventory of woody vegetation
  • mapping of habitats
  • breeding bird censuses
  • small mammal populations
  • breeding amphibian populations
  • the effects of acid deposition
  • insects of the Preserve
  • understory vegetation
  • watershed characteristics
  • field experiments on the significance of predators to ecosystem function
  • tree disease and ecosystem function
  • functional diversity of predators
  • computerizing research results
  • mapping soil characteristics
  • establishing permanent forestry plots

Support
A stipend is available in the form of the provision of living quarters in one of the Preserve's cabins. In addition, depending on the project, some additional funds may be available. Usually internships for college level credit do not carry a stipend.
