AMSA Health Policy Internship

http://www.amsa.org/hp/hippi.cfm
For pre-medical & medical students and residents interested in health care, public affairs, policy, and politics, the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) is offering an internship in health policy and politics at AMSA's national headquarters near Washington, D.C.
During the elective, interns will work with AMSA's Legislative Affairs Director, assisting in the everyday business of AMSA's Legislative Branch. This may include lobbying on Capitol Hill, attending coalition strategy meetings, researching current topics, drafting policy statements, and organizing briefings.
We are excited to offer interns the opportunity to develop political campaigns on issues in which AMSA is working:, resident work hours medical student debt, health care in the elections, medical malpractice, and others. Interns will be responsible for becoming familiar with one of these subjects, preparing background materials on their topics, scheduling lobby visits and carrying them out. Interns need not worry if they have not lobbied before, as sessions will be conducted with the Legislative Affairs Director to prepare the interns for their lobby visits.
Alternatively, interns can work on a project of mutual interest to the intern and AMSA (e.g., GME financing, prescription drug coverage, Primary Care, etc.). Students need not have a topic in mind when applying, in which case one can be selected soon after internship begins. Interns will be expected to complete a short research paper by the completion of the internship. Readings and research materials will be provided.

No previous policy or political experience is necessary.

AMSA Health Policy and Politics Interns have produced a number of informative documents and projects over the years. These are located mostly on the pharmaceutical industry, health policy and resident work hours sections of the AMSA website.
Internships from September to May are 4-8 weeks in length with flexible dates. For internships during the academic year, applications are due 4 weeks prior to your preferred start date. Academic credit for electives often can be arranged with your home institution.
Summer internships are also available. They are typically 4 weeks in length, with flexibility with when you would start. The application deadline for summer internships is March 1. You will be notified by March 25.
Students must be AMSA members at the time of their internship; applicants can join AMSA online if they aren't already a member. Although AMSA cannot provide a stipend, free housing is available.
Complete applications will consist of a current resumé, a writing sample of three-five pages and a letter of intent, which will include:

  1. Name, address, phone number, email address (if available),
  2. Preferred dates for the internship,
  3. Current university, year of study, major & minor,
  4. Description of your interest in health policy/politics,
  5. Topic of interest you'd like to pursue during the internship, and
  6. Future career plans and how this internship will further your goals.

Letters should be no longer than 1000 words. Prospective interns should also specify whether they are interested in one of the specific lobbying internships, or whether they would prefer to work on other topics.
