Alice Lao
"My name is Alice Lao and I am an Environmental Science major from the Class of 2010. After graduating, I plan to go to graduate school to pursue a degree in Public Health. It was not until in my junior year did I first hear about the OURS program, when I attended one of the “Undergraduate Research Fair for the Life and Natural Sciences” in October 2008. At the OURS table, Lin Tang introduced herself as an advisor to this wonderful program. She explained how this program helps to place students who are interested in participating in doing research.
This program allows one-on-one interaction between the student and the advisor. OURS has helped me to improve my resumes and cover letters for the places I am applying to. The weekly meetings and advices given are very helpful in uncovering what I was really interested in. Also, the OURS program has found immense amount of internship/summer research opportunities in my major! Without the help of this program, I probably would not where to start looking for these internship/research opportunities.
Students should take advantage of the OURS program regardless of their major. Whether you are student preparing for medical school or even a math major, if you are interested in doing undergraduate research or an internship, the OURS program will do their best to help find resources and prepare you with an opportunity of your interest!"

"I am a graduate of the class of 2008 majoring in Biology. Right now I am planning on taking some time off from school to work in the mean time. I went to the OURS office for help because I heard that students could receive help in trying to find opportunities in internships and job placements. At the meeting we spoke about what I was looking for and we developed a strategy to get me to where I would like to be. It was very successful since I have had the opportunity to apply to many places and have gotten some interviews!" |

Jeremy Hugh Class of 2008
Biology major (pre-med)
"OURS office is a great resource for finding extra- and co-curricular activities. Unfortunately, I was only able to utilize this resource in my last year at UMass. In the past I had to find my own opportunities which was time consuming and pretty stressful, but the OURS office has a great collection of options for pre-medical students like myself who are looking to boost their resume. When I did utilize OURS, I was given some great opportunities such as clinical research abroad and lab research. If I was able to use this in my earlier years, I know I would have had a much easier time getting internships and experience because of the number of opportunities available- you can apply to as many as you want. As a student going to medical school next year, who went through the painful process of finding resume enhancements, I strongly suggest visiting the OURS office as your FIRST resource. It’s a no-brainer way to increase your chances of getting that great internship, which will get you a great application and references, and help you reach your academic goals". |

"I am a Biology major with a Pre-Med focus. I transferred to UMass this semester
and was looking for ways to get involved in research opportunities. Through the
OURS office I have been guided to so many amazing research opportunities. They
were friendly and kept me on track with guidance in how to go about getting
recommendations and application materials. They even helped me fix my resume and
application essays!"

Biology major
"The OURS office is a great resource when it comes to connecting
students with opportunities within their field of interest. As I plan
to apply to medical school in the future, OURS has given me the chance
to attend a Biology conference in Washington, D.C.. The support that
the OURS office provides to students is clearly aimed in helping them
with future endeavors that they will like to pursue or explore
further. In addition, the friendly staff members are always available
to help make any opportunity an opportunity to remember".
