Washington University Research Experience for Undergraduate
http://www.reu.eece.wustl.edu/index.html
The Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering department (EECE) at Washington University in St. Louis (WU) has instituted a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program on "Energy Research with Global Reach". This program will provide an opportunity for ten outstanding undergraduates to spend ten weeks (including international visit) at WU during the summer, where they will conduct independent research under the guidance of one or more faculty members. They will spend two and half weeks of their stay in one of the McDonnell Academy Global Energy and Environment Partnership partnering institutions (MAGEEP, one of the 25 global institutes visited every year by the MAGEEP international program).
Selected List of Projects
- Next generation light harvesting devices for solar cell fabrication
- Micro/nano photonics research for next generation solar cells
- Metabolic engineering of thermophilic bacteria to produce biofuel
- Capacity fade analysis of lithium-ion batteries
- Model based optimal design of lithium-ion batteries
- Flame synthesis of cathode materials
- Sustainable geological CO2 sequestration
- Coupling of heat regeneration and chemical looping concepts
- Optimization of metal-oxide particle characteristics for chemical looping combustion
- Carbon-dioxide capture from oxy-coal combustion systems
- Submicrometer particle formation and capture of Hg in oxy-coal combustion exhausts

- To be eligible to participate in the Summer REU program, the student must be enrolled in a college or university as an undergraduate student. The student should be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident to apply. The expected graduation date of the student must not be before Spring 2012. Preference will be given to students with strong interest in gaining research experience in preparation for graduate study. Members of underrepresented minority groups, students with disabilities, and women are encouraged to apply.
- Undergraduate students from Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years can apply. Preference will be given to current sophomores and juniors.
- Students majoring in engineering, math or physical sciences are eligible to apply. A minimum GPA of 3.2 out of 4 in the major is required.
- Participants will receive a stipend of $4000 for the 10 week program. The REU program for 2011 includes a trip to Hong Kong (travel and accommodation paid) to gain international research experience in energy and environment for two weeks, for the participating students. Travel expenses (upto $500) will be provided for non-WU students to reach St. Louis. The department of EECE will provide a subsidized accommodation ($12 per day) for the students.
