Former University of Massachusetts pitcher Danielle Henderson,
the only member of the U.S. softball team's rotation who wasn't
with the gold-medal team four years ago in Atlanta, struck out
seven in five-plus innings, as the United States beat Cuba 3-0
Monday.
A day after the Americans opened the Olympic softball tournament
with the games' first solo no-hitter, Crystl Bustos homered twice
to help Henderson get the win.
Bustos and Sheila Douty hit back-to-back homers in the second
inning, then Bustos added another in the fourth to give the United
States an insurance run to up the team's record to 2-0.
Henderson, who was 9-0 with an 0.13 ERA on the advance tour,
looked shaky early as Cuba had a baserunner in each of the first
six innings.
Henderson, a right-hander who now is an assistant coach at UMass,
also hurt her cause with two poor throws to first base.
After Henderson walked the first batter of the sixth inning,
Worcester native Ralph Raymond, who is coaching the team, brought
in Christa Williams. She struck out five over two innings to earn
the save.
