UMass Amherst

About Us

Our department is dedicated to maintaining a welcoming and supportive environment that enhances the lives of the diverse mix of families who live, work, and study at UMass. Our physical space includes areas where individual parents can get respite, support, and small groups of parents can meet.

Office of Family Resources (OFR) programs currently include the Amherst Family Center (AFC), a parent education workshop series (Dinner On Us), an interactive cultural enrichment and a creative arts series for parents and children (Special Saturdays), Care.com memberships for student and AFC parents, and management of the Undergraduate Child Care Tuition Assistance program (CCTA). In addition, OFR provides campus families with support including information and referral in the areas of: parenting, child development, community resources, and school or work/family issues.

OFR works closely with the campus childcare program, the Center for Early Education and Care (CEEC); both departments are under the Dean of Students Area within the larger Vice Chancellery for Student Affairs and Campus Life (SACL).

Family Programs

OFR offers programs to provide caregiver support, education and skill building. These programs are supported by a mix of campus-based trust funds, public and private grants, individual and corporate donations.

OFR's campus-based programs are open to all UMass families including families that participate in OFR's Amherst Family Center program.

All OFR programs and services are offered free of charge. A professional staff person experienced in early childhood oversees all OFR programs that include supervised childrenís activities. Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver at all OFR sponsored programs.

Care.com

OFR has paired with Care.com, an on-line service that connects households in need of services with individuals providing those services. The service provides campus and AFC families a Care.Com premium membership at no cost. Additionally, Care.Comís contract with OFR also offers a Child Care Co-op for those families interested in exchanging care (for example graduate student match up with other graduate student) with another family. OFRís collaboration with Care.Com is open to campus and AFC families.

Childcare Tuition Assistance

OFR awards child care tuition assistance to fee paying undergraduate students that need assistance paying for Pre-K day care or K-6 before or after school care. This program is not open to students enrolled through CPE or UWW programs.

Advocacy

OFR supports and empowers campus families through its commitment to promoting family friendly policies and programs.
