Information on Local Editors and Writing Coaches

The Office of Faculty Development does not endorse any particular editors or writing coaches; however, we are happy to provide an alphabetical listing of individuals who provide us with descriptions of their services and experience. For a list of references or to discuss whether the editorial assistance provided would be a good fit for your project, please contact those offering services directly. In addition, we encourage you to review the University of Virginia ’s Teaching Resource Center’s excellent tip sheet on selecting an editor or coach.

Local editors who wish to have their information included on this page should email all relevant information (as outlined below) to: faculty@acad.umass.edu.  Editors must include the names, email addresses, and telephone numbers of three faculty clients (current or former) who are willing to provide a reference. Editors who do not provide a minimum of three faculty references cannot be added to the list.

Degrees, Experience and/or Subject/Disciplinary Area

Experience

15-plus years editing academic and scholarly manuscripts--books, articles, edited collections, and journal issues.

Areas of specific interest and expertise

My main areas are classical studies; medieval and modern European literature, history, philosophy, and religion; English literature and history; American literature and history; history of scholarship; contemporary literature and literary theory.

Editing Service

Services offered

Copy-editing: punctuation, grammar, spelling, readability, consistency, conformance to publisher's guidelines

Line-editing: clarity and concision, prose style, structure of arguments, flow

Developmental editing: organization and structure; how the material can best be presented to your audience; making a manuscript longer or shorter; turning a dissertation into a publishable book

Proofreading: for books and articles in the final stage of production, including works that will be set directly from the author's files

Process

Contact me by e-mail to discuss your project, and send a sample chapter, article section, or outline if available. Most routine editing is done by e-mailing files; edits are tracked or highlighted for review. Developmental editing or consulting on the dissertation-to-book process usually involves at least one meeting or phone conversation. For manuscripts that have been accepted and are being prepared for publication, I will work with the publisher's production editor.

Rates

$25-40, depending on the level of editing needed. Proofreading and mechanical editing are billed by the page, generally $3-5.
