The First Year

The experiences and characteristics undergraduate students bring with them to college can play an important role in shaping their choices, their levels of engagement, and their experiences while in college. In addition, research shows that the quality of students’ experiences and their level of engagement in the early weeks of college can have a substantial impact on students’ persistence, sense of belonging, and other important outcomes. In collaboration with the Student Affairs Assessment Office, we use evidence from students’ entering orientations and their early college experiences to study the influence these factors have on student success and to inform early college programming and support.
