SCHOOL OF NURSING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION 2013-2014

NOTE:  ALL scholarships will be presented in the first week of September 2013 and all recipients will be required to attend.  You must be fully matriculated during Fall 2013 to receive a scholarship.  Your scholarship will be posted on SPIRE in September.

Eligibility Requirement: A PhD student who must remain a full-time student and maintain a minimum grade
point average of 3.5. PhD Students Only need apply for this scholarship. Selection is based on the following attachments:

• Official transcripts from colleges/universities attended
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with a GPA of 3.2 or better
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken in the past five years
• Two (2) letters of recommendation
• Two (2) examples of scholarly writing
• A research focus congruent with that of a potential faculty research advisor
• Participation in an admission interview and the student’s expressed commitment to assuming a faculty role as a career goal.

Eligibility Requirement: Students enrolled in the PhD Program. Selection is based on financial need as well
as leadership potential within the profession.

Eligibility Requirement: Students pursuing a doctoral degree in Nursing. Selection is based on academic standing – the individual considered will have completed the equivalent of one full year of doctoral course work and will have interest in one of the following areas: behavioral/mental health, public health or health policy. Currently matriculated doctoral nursing student in Fall 2013. Attachments to be included with this application:

• Essay: In 250-500 words (1-2 double-spaced, typewritten pages) explain why you
are a good candidate for this scholarship based on: (1) your area of interest (behavioral/mental health,
public health or health policy; (2) the personal qualities and strengths you would bring to this area of
practice; (3) your academic performance;(4) why you would benefit from the scholarship.

Eligibility Requirement: A current graduate student in good standing. Only DNP and PhD students should apply. Selection is based on the following attachments:

• A 500-word essay which includes a statement that explores coaching as a teaching tool and as a
method to help practitioners gain more compliance. In addition, the essay must describe past and current experiences in the area of mentoring nurses and future plans after graduation for continued mentoring of new professionals.

Eligibility Requirement: Junior nursing students, Senior nursing students and Graduate nursing students currently matriculated in the Nursing program in Fall 2013. Selection is based on a strong GPA average, financial need and information provided by Financial Aid Services as well as an essay. Attachments to be included with this application:

• In 500 words or less, please describe your personal goals and aspirations as they relate to your career objectives and long-term goals as a nurse. How would this scholarship help you attain these objectives and goals?

Eligibility Requirement: A student must be accepted into or currently matriculated in an undergraduate
or graduate degree program in the School of Nursing. Selection is based on academic merit.

Eligibility Requirement: Students pursuing either undergraduate or graduate degrees in the School of Nursing. If a graduate student, the recipient must have at least five (5) years of nursing practice experience prior to entry into the graduate program. Eligible students need to be currently enrolled in the University during Fall 2013. Selection is based on an essay, financial need and information provided by Financial Aid Services.

Eligibility Requirements: Students pursuing either undergraduate or graduate education in either the
School of Nursing or School of Public Health and Health Sciences
who have an interest in hospice, palliative and end-of-life care. Eligible students need to be currently enrolled in the University during Fall 2013.
Selection is based on high academic standing, outstanding qualifications and leadership skills.

Eligibility Requirement: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the School of Nursing.

Eligibility Requirement: Students pursuing undergraduate nursing education. Selection is based on financial need and priority will be given to students who will broaden the race and ethnic diversity of the School of Nursing. Attachments to be included with this application:

• Essay: In 500 words or less (two double-spaced, typewritten pages), describe your perspective on Nursing including the following points: (1) Your reasons for choosing Nursing as a career, (2) the personal qualities and strengths that you bring to Nursing, and (3) your outside activities and interests that influence your approach to Nursing. Please use separate pages for the essay portion of this application.

Eligibility Requirement: Junior or Senior Students in the Traditional Undergraduate Nursing Program.
Selection is based on a high grade point average (3.5 or over) and/or be a member of Commonwealth Honors
College. In addition, the student must have outstanding clinical skills as assessed by their Clinical Faculty.

• Reference from the applicants’ Pediatric Nursing Instructor which speaks to their clinical skills and their level of proficiency.
• Essay (500 words or fewer) reflecting interest, experience and aspirations for a future role in Pediatric Nursing. The question for reflection in this essay is: “How would an undergraduate student in the Nursing Major prepare for a career of excellence and leadership in the field of Pediatric Nursing?”

Eligibility Requirement: First and second semester Junior nursing students in the Traditional Undergraduate Nursing Program. The selection process includes the completion of an essay, an interview with members of the Anton family. Attachments to be included with this application:

• Essay: In 750 words or less (three double-spaced, typewritten pages), please write an essay explaining why you are a good candidate for this award based on: (1) your academic performance; (2) the personal qualities and the strengths that you bring to Nursing; (3) your perspectives on Nursing; (4) why you would benefit from the scholarship. The recipient will be selected based on academic merit and
financial need; first preference will be given to students from Middlesex and Essex counties of Massachusetts.

Eligibility Requirement: First and second semester Junior nursing students in the Traditional Undergraduate Nursing Program. Selection is based on an essay, financial need and information provided by Financial Aid Services. Attachments to be included with this application:

• Essay: In 500 words or less (two double-spaced, typewritten pages), describe your future nursing goals and how you plan to achieve them. Include a discussion of your leadership and interpersonal skills as well as evidence of any committee or volunteer experiences you have had which have helped you develop these skills. Eligibility Requirement: First and second semester Junior nursing students in the Traditional Undergraduate Nursing Program. Selection is based on financial need and information provided by Financial Aid Services. Attachments to be included with this application

Eligibility Requirement: First and second semester Senior students from the Traditional Undergraduate Nursing Program, the RN to BS Online Nursing Mobility Program and the Senior Second Bachelor Nursing Program. Selection is based on class standing (upper 1/3 of their class) and eligible recipients must be committed to remaining and working in Hampshire County after graduation. Attachments to be included with this application:

• Letter outlining interest and experience in providing quality nursing care in Hampshire County.
• Essay: One page (double spaced) essay stating why you should receive this award.
