We are pleased to invite the Change of Major application of current undergraduate non-nursing major students who wish to apply to the Nursing major in the School of Nursing. Change of Major applications to the School of Nursing will now be reviewed.

Positions for UMASS students to Change of Major into Nursing majors may become available each year on a space available basis.

Applicants must have:

• Completion of 12 credits of UMass Amherst courses
• University GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Completed transfer application and essay
• You must have completed or registered for in Fall 2009 semester:
  
  1. Chemistry 111 or equivalent (beginning chemistry with lab)
     
  2. Psychology 100
     
  3. Anatomy & Physiology 1 or 2 (with labs)
     
  4. English Writing 112
• All required courses attempted must be passed with a grade of “C” or better.

There are 12 prerequisite courses for the nursing major. One of these (Nursing 312) will be taken during the Spring 2010 semester. Depending on the other prerequisite courses completed, it may be necessary to take unmet prerequisites during Summer 2010. All prerequisite courses must be completed before the start of the Fall 2010 semester. General education courses should also be completed prior to the Fall 2010 semester because the schedule of nursing coursework in the Junior & Senior years is a full course load and nursing theory and clinical courses do not follow the University schedule.

Change of Major applicants to the School of Nursing will be notified by Friday December 18, 2009.

Change of Major students are provisionally accepted into the School of Nursing. After the predictor/prerequisite courses are successfully completed, full acceptance into the SON program will be confirmed.

Change of Major students whose acceptance is confirmed in the nursing major at the School of Nursing will enter the class cohort that begins upper division nursing coursework in the Fall of 2010. These students will graduate at the end of the Spring 2012 semester. There are three student places to be filled that are vacant. and an additional eight placements will be granted.
