MS/MPH Dual Degree FAQs What are the admission requirements?
You must be a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree, and meet all of
the requirements for the MS in Nursing programs.
When are application decisions made?
Once applications for both the School of Nursing and the University Graduate
School are complete, a joint Nursing-Public Health committee will make the
admission decision.
How many credits is the program?
The MS/MPH dual degree program is 60 credits - 30 in nursing and 30 in public health. Up to
six credits of satisfactory equivalent course work may be transferred
from another graduate program or may be taken at the University as a non-matriculated
student before formal admission.
How long do I have to complete the program?
You have five years to complete the program. Under unusual circumstances
and for individual reasons, an extension may be granted.
How often will I have to come to Amherst for classes?
The MS/MPH program is offered online through the Division of Continuing
Education. All required courses are online and practicums will be customized
for you, consistent with program goals. Each year you will be offered a one
day workshop for program orientation in Amherst.
For what positions will the MS/MPH credentials prepare me?
You will be prepared for public health leadership in health care agencies
across a broad spectrum of population-based delivery systems- public, private, professional, and legistative.We are committed to your preparation in the core competencies of public health through an emphasis on leadership development. You will be challenged to design programs,systems and cutting edge solutions for diverse populations. What financial aid is available?
Financial aid, including teaching assistantships, is available through
the University Graduate School. Individual applicants may be eligible
for a variety
of scholarships, grants or loans. Information about nurse traineeships
is available in the Scholarship Office of the School of Nursing.
How do I register for courses?
Non-degree students may register for on-campus nursing courses
with the graduate program secretary in the School of Nursing. The
Division of Continuing Education handles the registration for all on-line
courses, which are open to both degree and non-degree students. Once accepted,
students will get registration information
from the Graduate School, and will register on their own after consultation
with their faculty advisor.
Who will be my faculty advisor?
Each student will be assigned a faculty advisor from the School
of Nursing whose specialty is community/public health nursing.
