In response to the APRN Consensus Model combining the adult and gerontology populations under one role specialization, the College of Nursing is pleased to announce the opening of our new advanced practice nurse (APN) speciality--the Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP).
We will now be accepting applications for admission for Summer/Fall 2014. This popular specialty will prepare students to be eligible to sit for the new AGPCNP board certification examination through either the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

This scholarship opportunity was established in 2012. The Achieving Diversity Nursing Workforce Enhancement Scholarship opportunity is designed to support nursing students dedicated to promoting diversity, increasing positive patient health outcomes, working to decrease health care disparities and promoting health equity.
The College of Nursing congratulates Dr. Genevieve Chandler, RN, PhD, as recipient of the 2013 APNA Award for Excellence in Research.
Psychologists researching what she perceived to be nursing issues – that’s what got Genevieve Chandler, RN, PhD into psychiatric mental health nursing research. “I felt strongly that a nurse should be studying nursing, so off I went to the University of Utah to pursue doctoral studies,” she says. She took what had been the focus of her practice – creating health and wellness for patients through empowering nurses - and used it for her doctoral research. “The findings from my dissertation research indicated the critical importance of relationships amongst patients, physicians, managers, and mentors,” she explains. “These essential connections facilitate the information, support, resources and opportunities necessary for nurse empowerment. This relational empowerment research shifted my focus from changing the individual nurse to understanding how key relationships in the work environment influence the individual’s work effectiveness.”
As she researched further her focus once again shifted. “From my recent descriptive studies on the reduction of the use of seclusion and restraints, I learned how nurses took their experience of empowerment and used it to create relationships that empowered patients,” she says. “I wondered how we could use this to swim upstream and interrupt the trajectory of adverse childhood experiences developing into symptoms which can lead to adult chronic illness,” she continues. “Over 100 studies have documented the relationship between childhood trauma and physical and mental health such as COPD, liver disease, obesity, HIV, depression, and suicidality.” Her current research focuses on how nurses can empower young adults to cultivate resilience in order to develop healthy behaviors and manage symptoms of adverse childhood experiences. The initial results show that the four week strength-based resilience intervention, Empower Strength! has had a significant effect increasing health behaviors.
Chandler’s colleague provides a snapshot of her research career thus far in a few sentences: “She was an ‘early adopter’ of the importance of resilience and empowerment as a means to change the work environment, build nurses’ self-esteem, and elevate the professionalism of nursing,” says nominator and fellow co-chair of the APNA Graduate Branch of the Education Council Carole Shea, PhD, RN, FAAN. “She developed a way to give ‘voice’ to nurses, administrators, and students through her well-researched empowerment model and, her unique structured writing seminar.” What Chandler sees, as she looks back at her career is, not surprisingly, relationships and connections: “The joy of being a nurse that affords the opportunity for such close connections to patients; the satisfaction of mentoring students and faculty; and the excitement of connecting to other nurse scientists through publications, presentations, and professional involvement.”

Dr. Frank Sup and Dr. Krisnamurty both from the College of Engineering and Dr. Cynthia Jacelon from the College of Nursing have been awarded a 5-year grant from the National Science Foundation to fund teams of students comprised of nursing and engineering students working with older adults to improve functional abilities.
This proposal creates a new collaborative opportunity for undergraduate mechanical engineering and nursing students to partner in their senior capstone courses. The focus of their capstone design projects will be to develop assistive devices for older adults that will help them maintain quality of life and retain independence. In this collaborative approach, teams of students will work with an older adult client from a retirement community to identify challenges they are having with Instrumental Activities of Daily Life (IADLs), which are as essential for independent living. Teams will develop solutions using engineering principles and nursing practices to create usable, economical, and reliable devices that fit into the daily life of the older adults. The collaborative process with older adults as clients will enable the students to gain insight into the user's needs and requirements and develop solutions that are customized for their use. This proposal is motivated by the impending rise in the number of older adults in the United States and their desire to remain independent and lead a fulfilling life. Without assistance with IADLs, they will require increasing levels of support from family or institutions. The capstone design focus will be on developing economical assistive devices that can both help older adults maintain independence and quality of life. The proposal creates a stimulating and collaborative environment for the proposed projects through the synergistic partnership between the faculty and students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and School of Nursing and the older adults and staff at Mason Wright Retirement Community (Springfield, MA) and the Jewish Geriatric Services (Longmeadow, MA).

Stephen J. Cavanagh, dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will join 171 nursing leaders nationwide to be inducted as fellows of the American Academy of Nursing at its annual meeting Oct. 19.Cavanagh is one of only eight fellows selected from Massachusetts. He was named dean of the UMass Amherst College of Nursing in July 2011, and had previously been professor and associate dean for academic and clinical affairs in the College of Nursing at Wayne State University in Detroit.The American Academy of Nursing is composed of more than 2,000 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy and research. The fellows include hospital and government administrators, college deans and scientific researchers. With this new class, fellows will represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 19 countries.“Selection for fellowship in the academy is one of the most prestigious honors in the field of nursing,” said academy president Joanne Disch. “I congratulate all of the new fellows and look forward to honoring their accomplishments and welcoming them into the academy.”Selection criteria include evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care and sponsorship by two current academy fellows. A school-wide celebration is being planned for the Fall.
This marks an exciting new era for the College of Nursing, as we approach our 60th Anniversary.
For the past 24 months, the School of Nursing, Department of Landscape Design, Sisters of St. Joseph, and the Hampshire Sheriff's Office combined efforts to build an outdoor 80-foot green labyrinth on the grounds of the Hampshire County Jail. This project was combined with the creation of a training manual and curriculum aimed at the rehabilitation of incarcerated men. Now in its 7th year, the labyrinth walking program combined efforts of community members, university faculty and students, and the incarcerated men who built and planted this space, resulting in a robust and transformative treatment program.
Thanks to the generous efforts of the Northampton Community TV, a 23 minute documentary is now available on YouTube.
The School of Nursing is proud to welcome Alumna, Dr. Susan Hagedorn’77 to Skinner Hall on Thursday, April 4th. Dr. Hagedorn will be presenting her film Island Nurse. This documentary tells the story of Mary Donnelly, who has served as the Block Island nurse for over fifty-five years. Click here to watch the trailer.
Dr. Hagedorn is a nationally recognized nurse, filmmaker and philanthropist. Dr. Hagedorn first earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Ohio Wesleyan University before attending the UMass Amherst School of Nursing to earn a bachelor’s in nursing in 1977. She then went on to receive her master’s in nursing from Boston College and PhD in nursing from the University of Colorado. In 2010, she completed her master’s program in media studies at The New School.

The Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) University of Massachusetts has elected Dr. Jeungok Choi as one of its 2013-2014 Scholars. During her year as an ISSR Scholar, Dr. Choi will develop a grant proposal for the project entitled, "Improving Discharge Communication using Pictographs." The aims of this project is to 1) compare the effects of Web-format, or paper-format pictograph-based discharge instructions, and 2) verify casual links between pictograph-based discharge instructions in both web and paper format and comprehension, recall, and health outcomes.
The ISSR Scholar Program provides a course release for an interdisciplinary seminar of six social science faculty from across the university to meet regularly through the academic year to develop individual research grant proposals. The seminar will include ongoing presentations and discussion of faculty research proposals, advice on grant writing and submission, information about grant agencies, and opportunities to meet national scholars for consultation.

The study begins with a brief survey on survey monkey, followed by an invitation to the 4-week workshop or participate in 2 online follow-up surveys so we can compare whether the workshop made a difference. Professor Jean Swinney from the School of Nursing was awarded a total of $892,559.00 to implement a program called Achieving Diversity: A Comprehensive Approach to Nursing Workforce Diversity Enhancement. Over a three year period the UMass Amherst School of Nursing will implement a multifaceted, collaborative initiative whose overarching goal is to increase the number and percentage of ethnic minority and disadvantaged nurses employed in the national nursing workforce.
The program will develop and implement an integrated, region-wide series of interventions, with a focus on Springfield and Holyoke, whose principal aims are to: 1) increase the number of ethnic minority and disadvantaged students who choose and successfully prepare for careers in nursing, 2) to enhance the existing structures of support and communication at the college level to increase the percentage of ethnic minority and disadvantaged students who successfully complete baccalaureate degree nursing programs and pass the NCLEX nursing examination both within our region and throughout the US. The Project will also provide student support in the forms of scholarships and stipends.
This program also includes extensive interventions to interest and support pre-collegiate students in pursuing a nursing education while encouraging ethnic minority Bachelors students to enter the PhD in Nursing program in order to become potential new UMass faculty members.
The Achieving Diversity program address the serious health implications related to the continuing shortage of ethnic minority and disadvantaged nurses in our nation’s nursing workforce.

I would like to thank and recognize the faculty and staff for their participation in the School of Nursing’s Faculty and Staff Campaign. This year 1,162 members of our campus community donated over $727,000 to support the Campaign.
The School of Nursing ranked in 2nd place for participation with a rate of 45%. This past Wednesday, Donna Zucker, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, accepted the award on behalf of the School. We had 18 out of 40 colleagues make a donation to UMass Amherst. We donated over $3,000. This will be matched dollar for dollar and total over $6,000 towards the School of Nursing!
The importance of the success of this Campaign cannot be overstated as it shows our support of public higher education and demonstrates our commitment to UMass Amherst. The strength of the University of Massachusetts Amherst is defined by its faculty and staff and because of your support this strength continues to grow.

This year University Massachusetts, Amherst Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient Susan Hagedorn '77 is a nationally recognized nurse, filmmaker and philanthropist. As a retired pediatric and women’s health nurse practitioner specializing in adolescence, Hagedorn serves on the emeriti faculty of the University of Colorado School of Nursing.
After retiring from her career in medicine, Hagedorn decided to pursue her love of filmmaking. She founded Seedworks Films for which she produces and directs documentaries for social change. Seedworks Films is the largest producer of films about nurses and nursing in the United States and is the action arm of The Seedworks Fund, a non-profit foundation whose mission is seeding social change with an emphasis on health, education and vulnerable families.
