The School of Nursing boasts over 3,700 alumni who have graduated from the Amherst campus since our School's beginning in 1953. Our alumni truly span the globe, practicing nursing throughout the world and in every specialty. The School of Nursing Alumni Board establishes a network of support for each other and the school. Our purpose as a board is to celebrate achievement, communicate, and support the attainment of School of Nursing goals. As one of our School of Nursing alumni, you will receive communications from the School, invitations to events, and requests for your support. We aim to keep you informed of the Amherst campus School of Nursing activities, and bring you messages from our Dean, Eileen Breslin, and the alumni board as well as updates about the achievements of our alumni. Your active participation in our alumni activities will benefit you in important ways throughout your life, and is critical to our shared success. This year the SON Alumni Board had a number of wonderful nominations for 2007 Distinguished Alumni. After much discussion and deliberation the members voted on two outstanding individuals to receive the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award. Lt. Col. Judith A. Lee BS,MSN
Lieutenant Colonel Judith Lee has served in the United States Army for 20 years. Judith currently serves as Chief of Inpatient Services at Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Judith has had an extensive and honored military career since leaving UMass Amherst School of Nursing where she obtained her BS in 1986, this was followed by an MSN in 1997 from Emory University. Judith has been a clinical staff nurse from Hawaii to Honduras and many places in between. She went on to become a medical surgical nurse with varying units from Hawaii to Georgia and then onto Chief Nurse positions which led to her last deployed leadership position as the Chief Nurse at the 86th Combat Support Hospital in Iraq, the Army’s premier medical facility in that country. Judith and her team of health care providers were the focus of a recent HBO documentary, Baghdad ER, by award winning fi lmmakers Jon Alpert and Matthew O’Neill. In her spare time, Judith is an accomplished tri-athlete and owner of four Jack Russell terriers. Karen O. Moore RN,MS,FACHE Karen Moore has been in health care for over 30 years starting a career as a staff nurse and quickly assuming leadership and administrative positions. She obtained her RN from Boston State College in 1977 and her Masters in Nursing Administration at the University of Massachusetts, School of Nursing in 1989. She has been a senior health care executive for 20 years in academic and community hospital settings. Her work has focused on innovation and change management, strategic planning and implementation, confl ict resolution, leadership development, organizational ethics, new program development and monitoring and measuring staffi ng and productivity models. Some of Karen’s accomplishments include introduction of new patient care delivery models, development of new business partnerships with physicians, creation of a healing environment in a community hospital, interest-based labor contract negotiations and strengthening service lines across an integrated health systems to build clinical services regionally. Karen was able to apply her leadership as president of the Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives from 2004-2006. Karen also sits on the board of Medically Induced Trauma support Services.
