Heroes Into Healthcare

Heroes into Healthcare is a grant-funded initiative aiming to increase the number of minority and disadvantaged veterans with bachelor’s degrees working in nursing.

Veterans in the program are given credit for military medical/healthcare training; many program participants have served in Iraq and Afghanistan as US Army combat medics and US Navy hospital corpsmen.

Veterans’ proven abilities to handle stressful situations, work in teams, and process complex information serve as assets in the nursing field. There are several ways to participate in the program through the UMass Amherst College of Nursing:

  • A Nursing major
  • A 2+2 program, combining an associate's degree with two years at UMass
  • An Accelerated BS in Nursing

The program is federally funded by the Health Resource Administration and provides opportunities for scholarships and stipends.
