The School of Nursing currently has a new Clinical Simulation Lab facility that opened in the Fall 2008. The NCSL in Skinner Hall has 5 state of the art clinical simulation rooms (including maternity and pediatrics), 16 hospital bed/exam lab area and 2 clinical exam rooms .

Five Clinical Simulation Rooms

Each of the 5 clinical simulation rooms are well equipped with Hill-Rom head walls that includes simulated oxygen, suction canisters with suction capabilities and medical air. There are working beds, bedside tables, IV poles, IV infusion pumps, medication administration supplies, physiologic monitors, sinks, hand washing solution, gloves, IV supplies, thermometers, and other medical equipment as needed to simulate a hospital environment.

Four of the Simulation Rooms have the Leardal Sim Man. The other Simulation room is designed as a Maternity Pediatric Simulation room with a Laerdal Sim Baby, Noelle Maternity Manikin, Vital Sim Kid, 2 Vital Sim Babies, breast feeding training model and “Lactessa” breastfeeding baby.

High-tech video equipment (ceiling cameras, special monitors and AV boxes) are available in each simulation room to record simulations for viewing by other students in all the classrooms in the Skinner building. Simulations can also be recorded individually and replayed by the student or student group privately so they can critically reflect on their performance in the simulation. This is critical for the reflective discussions with faculty and students after the simulations.

Each simulation room has a control booth. In the control booth there is room for 1-3 operators. The operator running the simulation has a lap top with the Sim Man/Sim Baby program, confidence monitor, microphone, directions for the equipment, copy of the simulation and a one-way mirror to view the simulation. Special lighting and shades are available for adequate viewing of the student performing the simulation through a one way mirror.

Clinical Lab

The clinical lab area is composed of 2 large rooms along with a sink area that includes 8 new modern sinks with an emergency eye wash.

One large clinical lab room has 8 working hospital beds with new Hill-rom head walls at each bed with simulated oxygen, suction and medical air. New bedside tables and bedside stands are at each hospital bed area.

The other large clinical lab area has 8 new exam tables with stirrups. There are 8 Welch-Allyn wall otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes throughout the rooms.

In each room is a well stocked cart of Heath Assessment supplies that includes alcohol wipes, cotton balls, cotton-tipped applicators, tongue blades, tape measures, penlights, reflex hammers, tuning forks, ear thermometers, Welch-Allyn Sure Temp thermometers, non mercury Thermometers with sheaths, eye charts, blood pressure cuffs (different sizes), stethoscopes, and dual teaching stethoscopes.

Two Clinical Exam Rooms

Each clinical exam rooms has a new exam table with stirrups, rolling stools, desk, exam lamps, Welch Allyn wall otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes and other equipment needed to perform Health exams.

Other equipment:

The lab is also equipped with 6 Laerdal Vital Sim manikins that are utilized in the Clinical Simulation rooms and/or large class labs as needed. And 4 adult vital sim manikins, one child vital sim manikin and 2 Baby Vital Sims.

There are prostate models, pelvic models, breast models, testicular models, wound care models, ostomy models, 5 half torso models, 2 central line models, 6 plain baby models, 2 Nasogastric Insertion models, numerous catheterization models, 2 injection models, enema model, 2 ear models, heart model, and a skeleton. There are also 2 feeding pumps. This equipment is utilized throughout the year to teach many skills.
