Forest Products—Current Projects
Building Materials and Wood Technology is a broad field that includes
the study of wood as an engineering material and the technology involved
in converting timber into useful products. In the face of diminishing
supplies of non-renewable resources such as oil and minerals, renewable
wood fiber will remain as the principle engineering material for
necessities like housing, furnishings, paper, fiber products and
chemicals. Professional management of the companies that manufacture,
distribute and use building materials is perhaps the most critical
requirement for developing the technologically advanced housing our
society will demand in the 21st century. The Building Materials and
Wood Technology program at the University of Massachusetts prepares
students to be leaders in this broad professional field. This program
also provides information and technical assistance through its web
site at: http://www.umass.edu/bmatwt/.
In cooperation with UCONN Cooperative Extension, loggers and foresters
are surveyed on a quarterly basis in MA and CT to produce a southern
New England quarterly stumpage price report that was distributed
to loggers, foresters, landowners, and assessors.
