management for a variety of objectives. Urban and community forestry
education and technical assistance are provided to arborists, tree
wardens, and park managers..

needs for foresters and timber harvesters and develop programs
to address those needs with particular emphasis on BMPs.
- Work with the Forest Stewardship Program and other partners
to promote active forest stewardship and provide information on
forest management for a variety of objectives.
- Investigate and provide educational programs and materials on
managing forests for biodiversity.
- Work with appropriate partners and stakeholders to identify
educational needs for arborists and tree wardens and develop programs
to address those needs.
Coverts
The Coverts Program educates public advocates of forest stewardship.
Participants in the 3-day program are chosen competitively from land
trusts, town conservation commissions, and natural resource professions.
Through a combination of lectures, field trips, discussions and working
sessions, participants are exposed to a variety of topics and issues,
including: historical perspectives on land use, forest succession
and ecology, wildlife habitat, land management and biodiversity,
timber management, harvesting and relevant regulations, principles
of successful communication, and the development of outreach plans.
The activities of these volunteers are monitored throughout the year
and additional information and encouragement is provided as needed.
In cooperation with UCONN Cooperative Extension, loggers and foresters
are surveyed on a quarterly basis in MA and CT to produce a southern
New England quarterly stumpage price report that was distributed
to loggers, foresters, landowners, and assessors.
This site provides information to foresters, landowners, and others
on the status of forester licensing in Massachusetts. Information
on the legislation authorizing licensing, regulations and policies
governing licensing, and procedures and requirements to obtain a
license are available. Also, a frequently updated listing of continuing
education opportunities provides licensed foresters with information
on how to acquire credit to maintain their licenses.
