NRE Undeclared is specifically geared to the student who is unsure of a major. This option gives students the flexibility to explore a wide variety of opportunities before declaring a major. In the end, each of the departments offers a variety of options that will allow you to find a major to matches your particular interests.

What is the Stockbridge School of Agriculture?

The Stockbridge School of Agriculture is a two-year school within the College of Natural Resources and the Environment. It provides majors in Arboriculture and Park Management, Equine Industries, Fruit and Vegetable Crops, Horticulture, Landscape Contracting, and Turfgrass Management. Many graduates of the two-year program continue on and earn four-year degrees from a department within the College. More information about the Stockbridge School of Agriculture is on their web site.

Do any of the majors in NRE qualify for the New England Regional Student Program?

New England Regional Student Program allows students from New England that are enrolled in majors not offered a public institution in their home state pay a reduced tuition ($2571). Click here for a list of eligible major and states.

What is the Five College Consortium?

The University has joined with the other institutions of higher learning in the region to form the Five College Consortium. At no extra cost, University students can take classes at four private colleges -- Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith -- all linked by a free bus system. You can start taking classes at the other four colleges during your second semester and may take up to 3 classes per semester. University students can also participate in and have access to facilities, libraries, cultural, and social events on these campuses.

What is the honors program and how do I apply?

The honors college at the University is called The Commonwealth College. Entering first-year students are admitted to Commonwealth College by invitation. Each student's application to the University is evaluated on the basis of academic achievement in high school, test scores, and an essay written by the student. Can I get credit for Advanced Placement courses I took in high school?

The University grants advanced standing and/or credit for the College Board AP exams. Credits vary depending upon scores and subject matter. Call the Admissions Office at 413-545-0222 for more information.

Am I required to take a foreign language as a student in NRE?

NRE does not have a specific foreign language requirement. Students with aptitude and interest in a foreign language are encouraged to pursue those interests. Students with interests in business or global aspects of the environment and natural resources may especially benefit from a working knowledge of a foreign language.

Can I have a car on campus?

Freshmen are allowed to have cars on campus, provided they register with Campus Parking Services. Keep in mind that it is not necessary to have a car to get around. There is free bus service, the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority that provides access to a wide portion of the Pioneer Valley. In addition, Peter Pan buses stop on campus and link Amherst with Boston, Springfield, and other cities.
